SHIRA CAPRICE OSTROV
December 13, 1986 - June 12, 2018
In October, Shira Ostrov was anticipating finishing her college degree, taking a Bahama's cruise to celebrate her graduation, marrying her fiance, and beginning a new job in the phlebotomy field of medicine. She didn't walk through her life, she raced: at breakneck speed with courage and grit as she conquered major health issues and struggled to achieve her goals. During the early sleep hours of June 12, her heart, which tried to keep up with her determination, failed.
Shira Caprice Emerson was born in Colorado Springs on December 13, 1986, to Lindy Rea DeCastro of Colorado Springs and Gregory Emerson, of Phoenix, Arizona.
While she was attending kindergarten at the old Ivywild Elementary, a Neuroblastoma Cancer was discovered, and she endured two major surgeries, eighteen months of chemotherapy, and interoperative radiation. Her Doctors, Harwood and Berrington, along with the support of Memorial Hospital staff and administration, devised these treatments allowing her to live twenty-six more years.
She attended Carver Elementary and Sabin Jr. High Schools until her family moved to Scottsdale, Arizona when she was thirteen.
After completing Central High School (Phoenix), she married, became a nail tech, survived Renal cancer, birthed two children and then began attending College America to receive a Medical Technician degree.
Given her history we would think hospitals would be the last place she wanted to work. But she wanted to help others on their journey through medical procedures. Her goal was to draw blood without hurting her "victims." And she usually succeeded.
She was preceded in death by her maternal grandfather, Linton (Link) Rea, and her Emerson, paternal grandfather.
Shira is survived by her parents; a pre-teen son, Nikoli; a pre-school daughter, Anya; at home, her fiance, Joe Durossette; two sisters, Sasha (Ben) Shortt of Kneohe, Hawaii, and Ashley Ramirez of Mesa, Arizona; two brothers, Levi (Nicole) Lopez of Colorado Springs, and Cody Whiteside of North Carolina. She is also survived by her maternal grandmother, Ferne Rea of Stuart, Florida; and her fraternal grandmother, Barbara Smith, of Maine; aunt, Kara Rea of Los Angeles; uncle, Glenn Emerson of Phoenix. She had a great-great aunt, Ruth Ann Rountree in San Diego, California; several great aunts, including Roberta Gulley of Phoenix, Arizona; great uncles, seven nieces and nephews and many cousins.
The family would like to thank the College America staff in both Phoenix and Colorado Springs for their dedication in helping Shira receive her schooling, and the numerous medical personnel currently work-
ing with her.
