Maureen Mary Hawkes (Sadie) Dell was born in Kettering, Northamptonshire, England to Dorothy and John Hawkes on October 23, 1928. Her older brother, Peter, preceded her in death. She was an accomplished ballroom dancer in her teens and survived World War II during her high school years. She received her certification as a Maternity Nurse and worked with children, both at that time, as well as later in Colorado Springs as a Teacher's Aide. On July 4, 1953, she married James V. Dell, her "Dingle". The Air Force took them back and forth between England and the United States until they settled in Colorado Springs in 1968, with their four children - Suanne Dell, Joanne Dell Fisher (Larry), Michael Dell and John Dell (Pam). Maureen became an American citizen in her sixties, but remained true to her British heritage, keeping in touch with many expatriates, exchanging recipes and jokes via the Internet. Maureen loved cooking, collecting cookbooks and was renowned for her baking. Her huge chocolate cakes were often given as a "Thank You". She gifted numerous baby sweaters and scarves that she knitted. She enjoyed clothes, social events, eating out, and gambling at the penny slots in Cripple Creek. She was eager to help out and volunteered at West Side Cares. As a convert, she had a strong Catholic faith and ran the powerful Sacred Heart prayer chain until her retirement last year. With her love, intelligence, spunk, humor and indomitable spirit, she made her mark in the world. Her greatest love was her family and friends. She was always Mum to her children, Gran to Kyle and Andrea her grandchildren, Aunty Maureen to her numerous nieces and nephews, and the love of Jim's life with whom she spent 57 years. She died knowing that she was loved, and with her family and all her friends knowing she loved them. We are comforted that she had a good life and is now with God and her family in heaven. Services will be held Sat., April 30th, 10 AM at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 2021 W. Pikes Peak Ave., Colo. Spgs., 80904. Reception follows. Donations in lieu of flowers may be made to Westside CARES, 1930 W. Colorado Avenue, Colo. Spgs., 80904.

I am so glad I found this guest book. I never met Maureen in person, only on the AOL food boards and I loved her dearly. She was so kind to all of us and had such a great sense of humor. I will miss her very much. May her soul rest in peace

To us, she was "Mrs. Dell." We loved hearing her accent and remember how warm and welcoming she was to us and to all her children's friends. We know Joanne and Suanne loved her dearly and we are so very, very sorry for this great loss. Our hearts go out to all of you.

I remember the first time I met Maureen when she and Jim came to see us in Illinois with their three beautiful children. I thought how brave to come to a new place and leave your home in England. Over the years we had so much fun - the weddings were always fun with Helga and The Mayor. I think one of the best memories of Maureen was if you mentioned someone was ill or had a problem her quick response was I'll put them on our prayer chain. She loved everyone and we were lucky to be her friends. I'll miss you very much. Sister-in-law Betty

I know Sadie from talking to her on the internet on AOL cooking boards.
The internet can be a cold place, but the warmth of Sadie came right through!
You will be missed, Sadie.

Maureen, you were the best! I am still knitting blankets for the hospital with the pattern you gave me in the 80's. Always there with tea and sympathy you help me through many crisis, and suggestions on projects to do everytime I left a job. Thanks to you photo albums are up to date, receipt rewritten and knitting projects for the needy continue. When your hands could not knit anymore I took the signal and knit less but have 6000+ on hats and blankets for needy all over the world. Stan, Mary Beth, Grant and Christine were saddened to hear of your passing but we do rejoice to know you are with HIM. I know your Mom was glad to welcome you. Prayers will continue for Jim and the family.
Love ya, Barbara Smith Port St Lucie, FL.

Maureen Dell... my sister-in-law, my friend. Maureen was one of a kind... always smiling and upbeat. Her and Jim had a special relationship and I can still hear in my mind the banter between the two of them. She was a great friend to talk to if anything was bothering you, always with a positive, down to earth understanding and always ready with prayer and support. She definitely contributed a great deal to all who knew her and to those who will reap the benefits through those of us who knew her. She is greatly missed already. Love you Maureen. Thank you for being so good to my big brother and for giving him such wonderful children and grandchildren and for sharing so much happiness with him for so long. Your sister-in-law, Dorothy

For those of you who were not able to be there, rest assured her memorial service was as beautiful and loving as our MUM.
We were so proud to be her children. Our friends brought homemade desserts to make sure Mum's legacy as a baker would not go forgotten. Thank you for all your lovely notes.

I so enjoyed many of Maureen's delicious cakes at numerous barbecues with her and her extended family. We had many funny times discussing the trials and tribulations of Princess Di. Maureen was such a fun and wonderful person.

Always enjoyed reading her recipes on the Comfort Food board on AOL. I don't think she knew how many lives she touched just by that board alone. Will miss her.

As a poor college student working at Paninos, I remember all of us would wait in anticipation of her special cakes on Thursday nights. It has been 25 years, but I remember how much joy she would bring us. Even though we have only seen her once or twice a year since them, she has always been special and I will be saddened to not see her again.

Mrs. Dell (as Maggie and I referred to her until we were scolded and told to call her Sadie or Maureen) were the recipients of her cakes every thursday night when we worked at Pizza Plus...We enjoyed both Maureen and Jim's company on those nights back in the 80's. Then we ran into Maureen at YMCA and reunited our friendship years later and kept in touch via xmas cards each year...Maureen was always accepting of Maggie and I along with our beautiful children and we will never forget that. Jim was always right there by her side being just as supportive. You will always be in our hearts...Thank you lovely lady...enjoyed the many email jokes, recipes, etc...RIP- Janie Anderson

Maureen has been on my mind and today, I tried in vain to reach her and learned of her passing. I, and many others, have a huge file of delicious recipes she so generously shared through the Comfort Food board on AOL.com...which ended a while ago. "Sadie Dell" as she was known, was a loving person who shared so much of herself with all of us strangers, connected only through our love of cooking. She will long be remembered and thought of with much appreciation. I am filled with gratitude for having known her and for her strength and prayers and wisdom when it was much needed. May she rest in peace in the "sitting room" above...I'm sure she was welcomed with a cup of tea and some fresh scones or tea cake.
