Ruth Higgins Obituary

Ruth Granston Higgins, resident of Monument, Colorado departed this life December 7, 2012 at home with her loving family. We know she is up there watching over us. She was born to Arnold and Edna Granston on July 5, 1934, in Denver, Colorado. She grew up in Wakefield, Massachusetts and attended Wakefield High School, where she was editor of the school paper, and a Greater Boston representative to Filene's Fashion Board as a teen model. She later modeled for the Hart Agency in Boston, and worked as a personnel assistant for Jordan Marsh Department Store. She was an active member of Rainbow for Girls, and became the Grand Worthy Associate Advisor for Massachusetts. She attended New Hampshire University, where she was a member of the Alpha Chi Omega Sorority. She also attended Duke University. Her major was British Literature. Her love of poetry and writing lasted through her life. She met her husband, Harbert (Hub) Higgins, while he was working at Boston University. They married on Christmas Day, which is also Hub's birthday, in 1955. They have two children, Holly and Eric. Ruth always loved sewing and made most of her and her children's clothing. Knitting and bridge became favorites of hers, as well. Hub was a Geologist for an oil company, and they lived with their children for thirteen years in Africa (Tripoli, Libya, Mogadishu, and Somalia). While overseas, they traveled extensively: visiting Europe, Kenya on Safari, the Seychelle Islands, and many other exotic places. When they returned to the US, they lived for 23 years in Ponca City, Oklahoma, where Hub worked and then retired from Conoco Oil Co. Ruth became interested in investing during these years, and continued for the rest of her life, investing for the family. It was a profitable hobby. Hub took up flying during these years. They also enjoyed their ski boat, which they put out on Kaw Lake most weekends in the summer. Ruth loved to watch Eric ski. They moved to Woodmoor. Colorado in 1998, a town Ruth loved. She was a member of the Monument Presbyterian Church. She joined the Tri Lakes Women's Club, where she joined many groups. Bridge, Knotty Pines singing group, the “B's, and Rocky Readers Book Club were her favorites. She made many wonderful and lasting friends there. She also was a member of Sertoma, and Kiwanis. While in Colorado, Hub and Ruth continued their love of traveling, visiting Antarctica, India, Tahiti, Korea, China, Micronesia, and renting villas in Italy and France. She had visited every continent but Australia. They also traveled many times into their beautiful Rocky Mountains, where Hub and Eric would fish, and she and Holly would play their favorite game, Scrabble. Hub, Ruth and family have always spent their summers in Bayside, Maine. Their 130 year old Victorian cottage was a summer home for Ruth as a girl, after purchasing it from her parents, she and Hub continued the tradition. The beauty of the Maine coast, the salt air, the old friends, and the lobsters drew them back year after year. Ruth is survived by her husband, Hub; two children, Holly & Eric; brother, Andy Granston and sister-in-law, Carolyn; sister-in-law, Mary Craig Hundley & Priscilla Granston; and many nieces and nephews. Ruth and Hub had a wonderful marriage which lasted 57 years and made many close friends all over the world. Ruth was a loving mother, whose sense of humor, selflessness and laughter will be sorely missed. She left us too suddenly and way too soon. A Memorial Service will be held at The Church at Woodmoor, 18125 Furrow Road, Monument, CO 80132, Thursday, December 13 at 2:00PM. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to Tri Lakes Women's Club, PO Box 669, Monument, CO 80132.

I knew the Higgins family very well when we all lived in Tripoli Libya. His mom Ruth was a very wonderful person. Eric was a very good friend of mine. We lost touch, but I'd love to hear from him again. If someone could forward my email address to him I'd surely appreciate that: [email protected]

I met Ruth through the Tri-Lakes Women's Club and played bridge with her a number of times. I always enjoyed her style, ready smile and sense of humor. She was a classy lady who will be missed by many, I'm sure. God bless her family and grant you peace as you deal with the big hole in your family this Christmas Season.
