Richard Rixon Obituary

Lt. Col. Richard H Rixon Jr., a retired officer with the United States Air Force, died May 14, 2014. Col. Rixon retired after serving four years with the United States Marine Corp and 21 years as a pilot with the United States Air Force. He had served during World War II in India and China and in England and Germany. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal with two oak leaf clusters, two Bronze Stars and the Republic of China Victory Medal.

He was born June 25, 1915 in Peekskill, Ny, to Richard H. Rixon and Mary Reynolds Rixon. He was married April 30, 1949 to Charlotte (Timilou) Furlow of Lake City, Florida. He had two sisters, Emily Dain Leving and Mary Butler Geiger, both deceased.

He attended the University of Maryland, graduated from the U.S. Air Command and Staff College and several other military schools.

He had been a resident of Colorado Springs, Colorado since August 1961. Following retirement from the military service he was employed by the U.S. Air Defense Command Headquarters for 11 years as Liaison Officer to the Royal Greenland Trade department in Copenhagen, Denmark.

After he built his own home in Breckenridge, Colorado, he was appointed to the Summit County Development Corporation and then to the Summit County Regional Planning Commission where he served as Chairman for 5 years. In 1982 he was appointed by Governor Lamm to the State Land Use Commission to represent the northwest area of the state, serving there for 3 years. Returning to his residence in Colorado Springs he was appointed to the El Paso County Planning Commission. In 1974 and 1975 he was interim Director of the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center and also served on the Board of Directors of Big Brothers of Colorado Springs. He was a member of Grace Episcopal Church.

He was predeceased by his wife Charlotte (Timilou), his wife of 63 years. He is survived by three children, Valerie Nottingham (Rob Yancey) of Sierra Vista, Arizona, Richard H. Rixon III (Hilary Chu) of Breckenridge, Colorado and Charlotte Toms (Gary) of Pensacola, Florida, two grandchildren: Leigh Nottingham Sand (Jeff) of Dolores, CO and Timothy Nottingham (Marika) of Tucson, AZ and two great grandchildren and a niece, Barbara Iverson of Fillmore, UT.

Interment at Grace Episcopal Church to be announced at a later date.
