Frederick Horner Obituary

Frederick Alan Horner passed away peacefully on February 21, 2013 at Spring Creek Health Care Center surrounded by family. He was born on June 25, 1921 in Cleveland, Ohio to Frederick and Helen (Black) Rex. His father died when Alan was two years old and his mother later married James Horner who adopted Alan. Alan grew up in Kirtland, Ohio, went to Kirtland schools and Fenn College in Cleveland, Ohio graduating with a degree in mechanical engineering. He served in the 2nd Division Marine Corps in the South Pacific from 1943-1946 in Guam and Okinawa, Japan. He was also called back as a captain in 1951 during the Korean War and served 17 months. In 1946 he went to work for Cleveland Tramrail Co. in Wickliffe, Ohio. In 1954 he established his own company, Chicago Industrial Company, in Glenview, Illinois and represented Cleveland Tramrail for 40 years. Alan married Phyllis (Aune) Horner, an army nurse, in 1946 after having met in Japan and they celebrated their 66th anniversary this past November. He was a Rotarian in Illinois and Colorado for 40 years with perfect attendance and after having moved to Colorado Springs in 1972 was elected the district governor from 1990-91 for district 547 in southern Colorado. Phyllis and Alan spent 20 winters in Gold Canyon, Arizona and made many dear friends there. They moved from Colorado Springs to Fort Collins in 2008 to be near family. Alan enjoyed gardening, having been raised on a fruit farm in Ohio. He also enjoyed golf in Arizona with friends, playing cards, visiting friends and he loved the several dogs that he had over the years. Alan is survived by his wife, Phyllis, daughters, Kathy See (Bill) in Fort Collins and Barbara Bauman (Wendell) in Niceville, Florida, granddaughter Heather Bauman, Panama City, Florida, and two great grandsons, Tyler and Hunter. He is also survived by one niece, Linda Dadian (Dan) and two nephews, Larry Ruud (Elsje) and Scott Wicks (Michelle), all in Illinois, plus cousins in Ohio. The family wishes to thank the staff at Spring Creek Healthcare Center for the kindness and the loving care Alan received during his 8 months at the facility and also the kindness and care of Accent Care Hospice staff during his last days. Inurnment will take place at a private family gathering later this year in Windom, Minnesota. A celebration of life will be held at 2:00 PM Thursday, February 28 at the Casa Grande Condos Clubhouse at 3454 Laredo Lane in Fort Collins. In lieu of flowers, the family would like any memorials to be sent to Realities for Children or the Larimer Humane Society in care of Allnutt Funeral Service, 650 W. Drake Road, Fort Collins, Colorado 80526.

Mr. and Mrs. Horner welcomed me into their home when I became friends with their daughter, Barbara, and I will always cherish those memories. When I think of Mr. Horner, I remember his generosity and humor, his dogs and garden, and his big smile. My love and thoughts are with his family.
