John Wheelan Obituary

John "Denny" Wheelan (LTC US Army, Retired) passed away unexpectedly on December 29, 2012. He was born to the late John and Frances Wheelan on June 24, 1940 in Hannibal, Missouri, and graduated from Bryan, TX high school in 1958. He graduated from Texas A&M University in 1962 where he was a member of the Corps of Cadets. He also earned a graduate degree (MA) from Eastern Kentucky University and attended the Executive Leadership Program at the Darden School of Business (University of Virginia). Denny was a career Army Officer and served in duty stations all over the world. This service included two combat tours in Vietnam where he earned numerous awards to include two Bronze Star medals. Upon retiring from the Army after 25 years of service, he began a second career with USAA eventually retiring as the Director of IT for the Rocky Mountain region. He is survived by his wife, Ute Wheelan of Colorado Springs; his three sons: John (wife, Karla) of Allen, TX; Kelly of Colorado Springs; and Kyle (wife, Susan) of Colorado Springs. He is also survived by four grandchildren: Abigail and Garrett of Allen, TX, and Shayla and Kaitlin of Colorado Springs. He is also survived by his sister, Linda Mauldin, of Houston, TX. A private interment will take place at Ft. Logan National Cemetery, Denver, Colorado.
