Stanley Flaks Obituary

Stanley Robert Flaks, 96, of Colorado Springs passed away on April 15, 2013. Stan was born on November 30, 1916 in Denver, Colorado to the late Abe and Mary (Meyer) Flaks. He received his diploma from East High School and graduated from the University of Denver with a degree in Accounting. Following college, Stan married Regina (Reggie) Schnitzer in 1940. He worked in Denver for his uncle, Charlie Flaks at Flaks Mercantile as well as for The Denver Insurance Agency Co. Upon his return from active duty in the Army and WWII, Stan and Reggie moved to Colorado Springs in 1950 to open a branch of Flaks Mercantile, candy and tobacco distributor. He was one of the founders of the S. R. Flaks Company, Welcome Smokers, and Smoker Friendly with his sons, Rick and Greg. Stan was active in the community serving on numerous boards; locally and nationally, including: Temple Beth El, Temple Shalom, Garden of the Gods Rotary, Memorial Hospital Board of Directors, The National Association of Candy Distributors, National Association of Tobacco Distributors and The Leukemia Society of America. Stan loved to travel, entertain, attend sporting events (especially golf) and making and repairing Reggie's picture frames. He was quite a woodworker. He loved attending the symphony as well as spending time with family and friends. Stan always loved to tell or hear a good joke. He took great interest in finding and hearing from distant family members. Stan was a wonderful man, loving husband of 73 years (just celebrated on April 7), grandfather, great grandfather and a tremendous father and role model. He will be greatly missed. Stan is survived by his wife, Regina (Reggie); two sons, Gregory (Lesley) and Richard "Rick" (Mindy); four grandchildren, David (Laurinda) Flaks and Rachel (Brett) Waldman, Steven and Molly Flaks as well as two great-grandchildren Dylan and Hope "Hopey" Waldman. The family wishes to thank the dedicated caregivers who faithfully cared for both he and Reggie for the past several years and to The Pikes Peak Hospice for their wonderful care. Memorial services will be held at 10:30 A.M., Thursday, April 18, 2013 at the Shrine of Remembrance Funeral Home, 1730 E. Fountain Boulevard, Colorado Springs, Colorado 80910. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Pikes Peak Hospice, Colorado Springs Symphony, or Temple Beit Torah. A reception and continued celebration of Stanley's life will follow at his home at 2612 Ashgrove Street, Colorado Springs, Colorado 80906. Online Condolences: ShrineOfRemembrance.com

Not sure what to say?

Stan Flaks, a true and loyal friend and boss to my father and family. A great man. For many of us, his passing signaled the end of an era. I think about Stan a lot. My father always looked forward to phone calls and lunches shared together.

We LOVED Stan for his gentility, generosity, spirit, honor, and for his interest in so many activities. But his true value was his humility and devotion to his precious family, and dear friends, of which we were for over 50 years.

Rick and Greg -- I always loved when your dad stopped in the office to visit his buddy Norm Coleman. The two of them would always tell the best jokes. I will always remember him and wish you both God's blessings in the days to come.

Dear Greg, Les, Rick and Mindy,
My mom Ruth and I send our love. Ruth and Stan were closer than most first cousins as both were only children.I have found several wonderful photos (probably from before 1920)of the two of them as kids which I hope to share with you soon. Love, Sue in Denver

My heart is truly broken and sad for you all. Mr Flaks taught me SO much in life that has carried with me. His phone calls - just to chat and catch up
The memories I have of his humor (How do it know!) To this day I say that alot and don't even remember the exact joke anymore but when we were together and he would say it with that gleam/twinkle in his eye - just brings a big smile to my heart.
He will be missed greatly.
My love to all of you- he was always so proud of his family!
WIth love,
Laura Meyers (Dukes)
