Elvera "Billie" Gallegos, a Colorado native born on October 10, 1930, passed away on December 31, 2012 at the age of 82. Billie was known for her love and acceptance of all people. She befriended people from all walks of life and was a woman of faith and conviction. Billie was amongst the first civil rights activists to take a stand against bigotry in Colorado Springs. In 1995 she was one of 50 native Colorado women selected to be part of an oral history project presented by the Colorado Springs Pioneers Museum. She served her community in many different ways. She taught nutrition in School District 11 Title 1 schools for many years. Billie is known by most for her maternal warm embrace. She was an artist with food, nurturing many with her delicious cooking. Billie is survived by her husband, Anthony L. Gallegos; her sons, David Lucero and Van Lucero; her daughter, Jackie Jaramillo; as well as 10 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. She came from a family of 15 children. She will forever be loved and missed by all who knew her. Billie's legacy of love, family and food will be carried on. A Rosary will be held on Sunday, January 6th at 7 p.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 2030 W. Colorado Ave. A Memorial Service will be held Monday, January 7th at 11 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 2030 W. Colorado Ave.

We just heard the sad news today of Billie's homegoing. We rejoice that she is with her Lord and Savior, but grieve deeply with you in her loss.
