Barbara Trzos Obituary

BARBARA (LEWARTOWSKA) TRZOS
September 13, 2019
Barbara (Lewartowska) Trzos, died in her home on September 13th, 2019, at the age of 98. She leaves behind her daughters, Margaret Trzos (Steven Nylander) and Irene Trzos, son, Thaddeus (Krystyna) Trzos, granddaughters, Amanda Zalewski, Stephany Trzos, and Katherine (Daniel) Teel, and great-granddaughters, Emma Zalewski and Lily Teel.
It was Barbara's deep love for her native country, Poland, which inspired her to join the Polish Home (Underground) Army after the German invasion in September 1939. Eventually her resistance activities, which included creating false identity documents for Jewish Poles to help them escape Nazi persecution, were discovered and she was arrested by the Gestapo. She was imprisoned, beaten and tortured numerous times over a period of 6 months, then condemned to Auschwitz concentration camp. In the latter part of 1944 she was transferred to a prison in Dresden, Germany and forced into slave labor at a factory producing war materiel. Because the February 13-15, 1945 saturation aerial bombing of Dresden by Allied air forces was so complete, the factory was destroyed and Barbara was sent to Bergen-Belsen concentration camp, where she and the other prisoners were subsequently liberated by the British Army in the spring of 1945. She met Tadeusz Trzos in a Displaced Persons camp, married and soon began a family. Unable to return to their homeland, now under Soviet control, they ultimately emigrated to the US. In later years, Barbara would tell her family it was her unwavering Catholic faith and trust in God that kept her alive throughout her ordeal. The unspeakable physical, mental and emotional anguish she suffered could have taken a toll on her faith; instead, her abiding love and trust in God grew deeper.
A patriot, a brave soldier, a daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, she is dearly missed. Only the knowledge that she is now in God's hands along with her husband Tadeusz, her daughters JoAnna and Kristina, and her beloved parents and siblings gives us the comfort and strength we need until we are all together again.
As were her wishes, a private Mass was held for Barbara at St. Peter Catholic Church in Monument. Her body rests in peace at Evergreen Cemetery as her spirit rests in God's loving care for eternity.

Dear Great Grandma Bapi,

I wish you were here, thank you for fighting for people's freedom in
World War II. I am going through a tought time, but I know you are here to comfort me. I love you with all my heart even though you are not here anymore, I will never forget you. I am proud of you and hope a lot of other people are too, our country would be a mess without you. You are a hero and I wish everyone was brave like you. Your are my hero!!

Love,
Your great grandaughter... Emma

To my sweet Bapi,
You were the most wonderful grandmother ever and my hero. No one can ever compare to you! I hope that one day I can be as much like you as possible! You loved us with all your heart! You were always there for me to talk to if I needed and I knew whatever I told you would be just between us. Thank you! I find myself thinking back to all the time we spent with you as kids. You always made sure we had the best time. One memory that sticks out is when you made us sandwiches to go stargazing at the park one summer night! Food always tasted so much better when you made it! I know it was all the love you put into it. Another favorite memory is when we would play Rumi all evening long, sometimes until 11 or 12 at night. We had so much fun; we laughed the entire time!I also loved watching Poldark with you. Who knew I would like it so much. :) I miss you each and every day, and Emma misses you too. Emma talks about you often. She said she wishes she could have seen you more these last few years!I do too! Im glad you are no longer suffering. You may not be here physically but I know you are with us spiritually. I believe 110% that we will see each other again! Until then..I miss and love you so much Bapi! XOXOXO
All our Love,
Amanda and Emma

My Dearest Bopi,
It's been a little while since we had to say goodbye, and it still hurts like it just happened. I miss you so much everyday and I still keep you in my daily prayers, as I will for the rest of my life. I try to remember that if I miss you this much already, I can't even imagine how hard it must have been for you to experience and live through the many losses of those whom you so deeply loved. So though I'm very saddened, I take comfort in knowing that you are in a better place and have been reunited with each beloved family member who has gone on before you. Everyone here misses you more than I can possibly articulate and it's a new struggle for us all without you, but I'm sure you are watching over us and have already interceded for us in our most recent scares and hardships. I am so grateful and happy that I got to have you as my strong and loving Bopi, and I have a very special place for you in my heart filled with many wonderful memories of you that I cherish - even something as simple as seeing you or hearing your voice was more than enough to brighten my day! I will miss you for the rest of my life, but I'll love you forever and I will see you again.
xoxo infinity,
Stephany

My Bopi,
It's so hard to believe that you are gone. I am so thankful to have you as a grandmother and I will always cherish the times we spent together. I hold all my memories with you close to my heart, and often think of you sitting at your dining table early in the morning playing cards while I would eat cereal after spending the night at your house. You made so many great memories for me and I am so happy to have those to hold on to for the rest of my life. Though Lily came unexpectedly early, I can't help but think it was for a reason- so that you could meet your great granddaughter. I am so sad that you are no longer physically here and couldn't get to know Lily more but I know that you are with us always and we will see you again someday. With everything that has happened with me over the last month, I know you have played a part and been a guardian angel watching over me and making sure I was okay. Thank you Bopi, I love you forever and ever and I miss you.
All my love,
Katherine
