MICHAEL NUSSBAUM
August 2, 1941 January 18, 2021
Michael Nussbaum, loving father, grandfather and husband, was born on August 2, 1941, and passed away peacefully with his family by his side, after a three-year battle with lung cancer, on January 18, 2021. Mike was a child at heart, loving any opportunity to chase a ball, learn something new, and teach others. More important than his successful career as an engineer, his proudest recognition was receiving the Volunteer of the Year award for his work teaching science to second graders in Colorado Springs. Family mattered most to Mike, and his sisters, Judy and Rosemary, his children, John and Beth, his six grandchildren, Alison, Emma, Michelle, JP, Pierce and Graham, many nieces and nephews, and his wife Maureen and daughter Katie, were the beneficiaries of his playful spirit, thoughtful wisdom and so many special memories together. Mike will be laid to rest at Evergreen Cemetery, next to his son-in-law. Memorial contributions can be made to Herrington Manor State Park, 222 Herrington Manor Lane, Oakland, MD 21550 in memory of Michael Nussbaum.

I am so saddened to hear the news. Mike was like a father to me while we lived next door to each other in Germantown, MD; for what was only a brief 6 years before he and Fran moved to Colorado Springs to be with their daughter Beth. I'll never forget the New Years' celebrations in their family room dancing to the oldies, playing cards, Sunday night dinners, helping with household fix-ups, working on yard projects together, and Mike's magnetic genuine character. You didn't need to know Mike for long to understand his genuine nature, that you don't see all that often in people. The laughter in his eyes and the way he clapped and rubbed his hands together in his exuberance of a new adventure yet to come. I thought one of the worst days in my life was losing Mike and Fran as neighbors, but losing him in the physical life is just as painful. The silver lining is that he will forever be the person that made such an impression on me to be a better person and if I can bestow that onto others, at half the job that he did, then his effect will continue on the world to be a better place. My heart goes out to the entire family, I love you all dearly. God Bless.

As a friend of Beth, I've seen her eyes light up when she talked about her Dad and how much Mike meant to her, throughout the ups and downs of growing up and then raising her own girls. It's wonderful to read more about him here and I look forward to more stories. What a guy to lead other dads out to Christmas shop for their families! - Eve Stacey

Dear Maureen, Beth, John, grandchildren, and family,
Reading the story about Mike, brought many smiles to me and a sense of deep respect for Mike. He gave so much not only to family, but to many school age children. The gift of education to these students is vitally important in forming young minds. The time and dedication Mike gave is honorable. All of "his children" will be better because of Mike. What a lovely man, father, husband, grandfather, and teacher! The world is a better place because of Mike.
May the family find comfort and peace knowing that Mike was a gentleman, compassionate, and giving. You could not ask for anything more. I will keep everyone in your family in my thoughts and prayers.
Sincerely, Stefan Zachar

We became acquainted with Mike over the last 9 years. He would bring his beloved Lady out to Black Forest for care when he went on one of his trips.
We would visit and share some common interests like volunteering helping children.
He was always upbeat, positive, and you could feel at ease with him.
We’re thankful for Maureen’s care and support for him.
We plan on visiting Herrington Manor state park in W. Maryland on one of our future RV trips, and remember Mike.
May you Rest In Peace sir.
