On behalf of Life Education Trust Far North we would like to send our condolences to the Bates families. When Norma was so involved with us we also had the pleasure of meeting her family. She was so proud of her children and Terry was always so supportive of us in the Far North. We are so sorry for your loss and remember him fondly as a very caring, kind gentleman.

Dearest Jennifer, Georgia, Jessica, Ellie, Brad, Ophelia, Oliver, Wolver and Wilder,
Our hearts are joined in sorrow with you for the sad loss of dear Terry, taken too soon from your midst. His lengthy illness was a journey of fortitude and resilience for you all, as well as for Terry. We have no doubt that the memory of his many fine qualities and his service to his family and society will be a source of inspiration, comfort and strength as you move forward in the days ahead. We expect that in abandoning his outworn physical garment, Terry´s consciousness has ascended to a world of light and entered a garden of happiness, where he is beholding many splendours.
With loving condolences, Suzanne and Kevin

Our sincere condolences to the Bates family. We well remember oir firdt meeting at Elliots Bay so many years ago. Terry was tying his tent to a fence as were we, in readiness for the arrival of Cyclone Bola. Everyone else had bailed out and his comment that they "had no bottle" spoke volumes of his attitude to such minor trials. After that initial test we had many years of meeting at the same place, and have so many treasured memories. He will be sadly missed. Colin, Freda, Casey, and Alice Knox.

Deep sadness to read of Terry's passing. My association with him was when he was Field Officer for South Auckland in the 1990s and during the time of schools being ravaged because of bulk funding. It was an utmost pleasure to be part of the NZPPTA team at a time that set strides of progress across the NZ Education system. Terry had an amazing manner and showed support for the members. My next meeting came when he was involved in the Ministry of Education around the 2000s. Terry had a love in caring for others. My sincere thoughts to Jennifer and his extended whanau at this sad time. A mighty man whose character will always be remembered and without his support and encouragement I would not be the educator I am today.

Arohanui Jennifer and whanau. My condolences to you on the loss of your loving husband, father and grandfather. Terry was great to work in his role as CEO of Cognition Education Ltd. So sad to know you are gone Terry, but may you rest in peace. A life truly well lived but cut too short, Terry was a great mentor, encourager, and role model. Always ready to laugh, but with a great intellect and mind, he was never afraid of a challenge, but this last one was too great to overcome in the end. He will be missed. I offer my condolences to Jennifer and the family at this sad time.

Dear Jen and family. We send you our very sincere sympathy at this time of Terry's death. Your tribute to him is lovely and recognizes his many talents and his generous and caring nature.
Although it's over 40 years since I worked with Terry, I remember well his passion for education and his fair and considered approach to bringing about change and improving experiences for his pupils. His record of hard work and commitment to many organizations tells us all that he was "a very good man."
May your many memories sustain you through the next difficult time of your life.

In my career, I was lucky to work with some great people, and Terry ranks with the best of them for his fierce intellect and dedication to excellence. Terry demanded high standards of himself, and others, but always mixed with understanding and wry humour. He made an enormous contribution to education and I treasure the memories of our time together at Cognition Education, often in pretty challenging times. Such a fine man and outstanding leader, whom I respected greatly. I will miss our phone calls to solve the problems of the world, and will remember Terry with the greatest respect and admiration for all that he achieved. Sadly missed. Sympathy to Jennifer and the family.
