Cynthia "Cindy" Smith Obituary

Cynthia “Cindy” Smith, 57, of Maddock, ND passed away surrounded by her family on June 23rd, 2025 at CHI St. Alexius Hospital in Bismarck, ND.  Celebration of Life Service will be held at 10:30 AM, Saturday, July 26, 2025 at the North Viking Lutheran Church with Pastor Cassie Borges officiating.  Visitation will be Friday, July 25, 2025 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM followed by 7:00 PM Prayer Service at the North Viking Lutheran Church.  In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Maddock Memorial Home: 301 Roosevelt Avenue 58348-7132 or to St. Aloisius Medical Center: 325 Brewster Street East, Harvey, ND 58341.

Cindy was born on October 18th, 1967 in Rugby ND, to James and Arlene Warner. She grew up on a family farm near Harlow, and was the youngest of five siblings, who often called her “the reporter." One of her favorite memories as a child was traveling to Kansas with her family for weeks at a time to do some custom harvesting. She even remembers playing Barbies with a young Martina McBride. Cindy attended Maddock High School where she participated in cheer and other activities. She graduated in 1985 and went on to study special education at Minot State University.

Cindy met Keith Smith, her high school sweetheart and life partner, in the halls of Maddock public school. They spent much of their younger years gathering with each other’s families, going to numerous concerts and music festivals together, and blissfully enjoying life. They married at North Viking church on June 10th, 1989. Together, they raised three children, Aaron Jason and Kelsey, on their farm west of Maddock. Cindy was a devoted mom who never missed an event her kids were involved in. Whether it was a ball game, track meet, concert, or other school event, she always supported her children in every activity. That love extended to her 6 grandchildren, whose birthdays, activities, and milestones she cherished deeply. She was recently blessed to see the baptisms of the two newest grandchildren. She was adamant about being there for it all, even while battling her illness.

Cindy’s early career was helping those with disabilities at 4th Corp, special education program at the Maddock School, and a daycare director. She later worked with local businesses Tracy’s Market, Lannie Simonson Building, The Legion and the Maddock City Bar. She was a people person and loved to help others.

Cindy was a lover of fun. She enjoyed summers camping with her family at Buffalo Lake, family game nights, and big gatherings with her friends and family.  She was often running around to activities with her partner in crime, her sister Cheryl. One of her favorite past times was going on roadtrips with Keith. They often traveled to NASCAR races, the Black Hills, and Colorado to see her dear friend, Lori. She really enjoyed challenging her family to mini golf on road trips and enjoyed vacations packed full of family fun and activities. She was a loyal friend and loved spending time with her crew. Cindy’s table was open to all, and she never missed an opportunity to invite others over for a holiday, birthday, or just a good Saturday night. She had a generous soul and adored her time with loved ones deeply. She was full of many admirable qualities that will missed by all who were lucky to know her.

Survived by her husband, Keith; her children, Aaron (Tiffany) Smith, Jason (Marta) Smith, Kelsey (Wyatt) Toso; grandchildren, Talyn, Rowan and Noa Smith, Kade and Audra Smith, and Soren Toso; siblings, Cheryl (Paul) Lunde, Arden (Linda) Warner, and Duane Warner; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins

She was preceded in death by her parents, James and Arlene Warner; brother, Jimmy Warner; father and mother in law, Reuben and Shirley Smith; and sister in law, Kim Smith.

May the love of friends and family carry you through your grief. This is unreal to me to be writing on my friend's obituary guest book while we are still so young. I am numb. Fly high sweet angel. I am the only one left of the three "chicken snatchers"!! (I know you are laughing Cindy and Jackie).
