On Wednesday August 6th, 2025, Freddie Melvin Hobbs, Jr., aged 67, formerly of Dinwiddie, VA residing in Las Vegas, NV transitioned to eternal rest with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Freddie was the eldest child born to Gertrude Harper Hobbs Jennings and the late Freddie Melvin Hobbs, Sr. on January 17th, 1958. He attended schools in Dinwiddie County and joined the US Navy after high school. Following his time in the Navy, Freddie attended Virginia State University with interests in math and history.
Freddie loved family, traveling, 3-piece suits with a hat, being well groomed, playing card games of every type, food, football (LA Rams), wrestling, good soul music (Frankie Beverly & Maze), dancing, and laughing/having fun. Freddie was a determined, independent, intelligent, successful and steadfast person. He would share anything that he had and went out of his way to spend time with and to dote on family and friends. Whether traveling in the Navy, driving trucks, or working for Amazon, he was able to visit foreign countries and all of the 50 states of America, he would call up family and let them know when he would be in town so he could visit, or he would just book cruises to experience the islands. As a member of the Dinwiddie County Sr. High School Class of 1976, he looked forward to attending its class reunions to talk and laugh with friends.
In 2006, Freddie suffered a stroke, but he did not allow his condition to stop him for long. Once he was able to rebuild his ability to live independently, he returned to Memphis, TN. Through his work with Amazon, he moved to Wisconsin, Ohio, and Arizona. However, his ultimate goal was to live in Las Vegas, NV. So, in September of 2024, he retired from Amazon and relocated to Las Vegas. He lived his life on purpose and in most cases, without apology but with a strong sense of independence.
In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by Sheila Rae Porter Hughes (wife); Grandparents: Washington and Susie Hobbs, and Franklin and Alma Harper; Uncles: Bernard, Herman, and Clyde Hobbs, John Johnson, Charles Streat, Clarence Gholson, Sr., Franklin Harper and Wallace Lambert; Aunts: Laura Streat, Mazie Johnson, Lillian Booth, Thelma Gholson, Emily Johnson, Frances Prather, and Ida Lambert; and several cousins.
Freddie leaves to treasure his memory, his mother Gertrude Jennings, 2 sisters: Juanita Epps and Terry Batson (VA); 2 brothers, Arthur Hobbs (Vera) (TX), and Carl Hobbs (VA); 12nieces and nephews: Sorcha Brown (TX); Nikela Kelley (Shelton) (TX), Latoya Jackson (VA), Sho-Dan Epps (WA),Kiyoshi Articuno (Kristine) (NC), Arthur Hobbs II, (TX); Gina Epps (VA), Bruce Batson (VA), Christopher Hobbs (SC), and Dallas Hobbs (TX); 5 great nieces and nephews: Isis Cordes and Jason Epps (VA), Harleen Epps (WA), and Ethan and Psalm Kelley (TX); Uncle Charles Harper (Jackie) and Aunt Lou Ellen Harper (VA); Aunt, Thelma “Sally” Hobbs (VA); a host of cousins too numerous to name; the Ampy family (Dinwiddie); and the members of the Dinwiddie County Sr. High School Class of 1976.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday August 23, 2025 at 1 p.m. at the Mt. Calvary Baptist Church, DeWitt, Virginia. Burial will follow at the Dinwiddie Memorial Park.
Public viewing will be held on Friday August 22, 2025 from 12 Noon to 7 p.m. at the Petersburg Chapel.
