Horace Martin Obituary

Horace Martin, age 87, died on September 27, 2021, in his home under Hospice care. He was born on sister Myrtle's birthday, November 25, 1933, in Butler County, and grew up on the family farm in the Fort Dale community. He was born hard of hearing and had other birth defects, but was able to overcome all, except his hearing issues, due to the care and love of his family, especially his mother.

After his father went to work for W.T. Smith Lumber Company, the family moved to town, in Greenville Alabama, where he attended school. He graduated from Greenville High School in 1951 and he was able to learn and progress, from learning to lip read. He loved playing dominos and various card games and continued to participate in these games, at the senior center in Greenville, up until just a couple of years ago.

After graduation from high school, he went to work with his father who operated several Standard Oil service stations which later became American Gas stations. Their last station was on College Street and they closed it as his father's health began to decline in 1975. He then went to work for Butler County where he worked until his retirement. After the passing of his mother in 1991, he loved to travel with his sister Myrtle as they made frequent trips to New York to visit sister Louise, Andalusia to visit sister Dorothy and Gulf Shores.

Horace was preceded in death by his parents, Harold Edward Martin and Ola Beverly Martin; his sister Dorothy Martin Simpler and brother-in-law Fred Simpler, Sr.; sister Louise Martin Lepore and brother-in-law Al Lepore; and sister Myrtle Martin Stowers. He is survived by eleven of his thirteen nieces and nephews and a host of great and great-great nieces and nephews. He is laid to rest at Sunrise Memorial Park beside his beloved mother and father and sister Myrle.

I'm very sorry to hear about your loss. I didn't know Uncle Horace very well, but what I did know was all good. I also appreciate the family letting me call him Uncle Horace, since he's not my uncle. Sending loving thoughts and prayers to you all, with many thanks for sharing your whole family with me over so many years!
