Mary Clifton Obituary

Colonel Mary R. Clifton (Retired, USAR), 87, of Bridgeport, passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 1, 2025, in Ruby Memorial Hospital, surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Richwood on September 2, 1938, a daughter of the late Daniel and Elizabeth (Ross) Clifton.
She is survived by her brother, Carl D. Clifton, of Bridgeport; and her sister, Betty King of Newport News, VA; her nieces, Lorraine Hall, Siobhan King, JoDee Decker and her husband David; and a nephew, John Allen Clifton and his wife Melissa; great-nieces, Kaylee Clifton and her partner Keegan Adkins, Sydney Foster, and Alyson Clifton; and a great-nephew, Mavrick Foster. They all carry forward her legacy of kindness and resilience.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, John C. Clifton; his brother-in-law, Gene King; and a niece, Susan King.
Mary's life was marked by service and care for others. While she was completing her Nursing Degree from St. Mary's School of Nursing, she enlisted in the US Army – WAC in October 1958. After completing her nursing degree in September 1959, she was commissioned in the US Army as a 2nd Lieutenant. It was during her service to the US Army that she became a nurse anesthetist, and was discharged on August 28, 1967 at the rank of Captain, after serving for almost 9 years and receiving the National Defense Service Medal. She transferred to the US Army Reserves Medical Unit in Pittsburgh, PA, attaining the rank of Colonial after 20 years of service. She was very proud of her military career.
She also dedicated many years as a nurse anesthetist at the Louis A. Johnson VA Medical Center in Clarksburg where she provided compassionate and expert anesthesia care to veterans undergoing surgery and medical procedures. Continuing her dedication to service to others, she volunteered at the Harrison County Health Department and even served as a substitute teacher in Harrison County. She was a member of Bridgeport United Methodist Church.
Memorial contributions in Mary's memory can be made to Black's Chapel Cemetery, Camden-on-Gauley; or Bridgeport United Methodist Church, 251 Worthington Drive, Bridgeport, WV 26330, which Mary Ruth supported in life.
Mary's wish for cremation will be honored and she will be laid to rest at Black's Chapel Cemetery in Webster County.

I remember Mary fondly. She was one of my customers at the Singer Store in Fairmont, West Virginia. She had a great sewing machine, and was a delight to serve. God bless you, Mary.
