Morris Massenburg Obituary

Mr. Morris “Bird” Vernon Massenburg received his wings on Tuesday, March 8, 2022. He was born to Webster Stone Masseburg, Sr., and Christine Jones Massenburg on January 30, 1956, in Sussex County, VA.  Morris attended Sussex Central High School.

Morris was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth Massenburg, his father, Webster Massenburg, Sr., and brother, Vance Massenburg.

Morris was employed at Georgia Pacific for 35 years until retirement.  Morris was known to be the life of the party. Morris loved to dance, hunt, and fish. He never met a stranger; every person in the world, to him was just a friend he had not met yet. He always saw the good in people and found an easy way to make us smile and laugh with his humorous ability to tell a story and quick wit.

He leaves to cherish his memories, a loving mother, Christine Massenburg of Stony Creek, VA; a devoted fiancé, Belinda Mayes of Stony Creek; two brothers: Alvin Massenburg (Hattie), and Webster Massenburg, Jr. (Judy); two sisters: Patricia Robb (Milton), and  Veronica Moore (Alvin); step-children: Aaliyah Mayes of Stony Creek, Delroy Mayes of Emporia, and Latoya Taylor (Melvin) of Lawrenceville, VA; grandchildren: Debrion, Kay’ Lei, Ja’ khi, Ja’Kiese and Ah’lana Easter - who was his heart; one uncle, Carl Edward Jones (Clara); three aunts: Mable Parham, Virgie Epps, and Doretha Adkins (Major); and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins; including a devoted cousin, Cornell Massenburg; very good friends, Dean Miles, John Turner and Bob Allen.

A celebration of life will be held on Wednesday, March 16, 2022, at 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church, Jarratt, with the pastor, Rev George Mayes, officiating. Burial will follow at the Parham Family Cemetery, Stony Creek.

Mr. Massenburg may be viewed Monday March 14, 2022 from 3pm to 7pm and on Tuesday March 15, 2022 from 12 Noon to 7pm at the funeral home.

Morris was a beautiful person who could make anyone laugh and feel better about yourself. He was full of joy and a loving and kind friend. Family remember that weeping may endure for a night but joy comes in the morning. Sleep on my friend because you have certainly gained your heavenly wings.

I remember Morris growing up together in Jarratt and Stony Creek. His sister, Patricia and I were very good friends in middle and high school. I have such fond memories of the entire Massenburg family. Sleep on in Heaven, Morris. Family, you all have my deepest condolences and will continue to be in my thoughts and prayers. Hold on to the beautiful memories of Morris. I know he brought such joy into everyone’s life. Remember that God will see you through. Much love and prayer.
