Ted Brown Obituary

Ted Howard Brown, 83, of North Platte, NE was born to George (Bus) Brown and Vivian Brown (Wilson) on December 20, 1941, in North Platte, NE.  Ted was a 1960 graduate of North Platte High School.  After graduation, Ted was immensely proud to serve his country and enlisted in the US Navy where he served as a Sonar Technician Surface (STG) on the USS Harry E. Hubbard battleship.  After his military service, Ted settled in North Platte, NE where he began working at Tom and Jim’s gas station, where he met Mary (Monte) Montgomery of Chappell, NE. They were married on October 27, 1963, at the First Christian Church and celebrated their 61st anniversary last year.  Together, they purchased the Conoco Service Station on the corner of Fourth and Jeffers from Layne Young, where Ted spent many hours working on his stock car that he raced on weekends. Ted was then hired by the Union Pacific Railroad as a special agent and later was promoted to locomotive engineer where he served the Cheyenne Wyoming route for 34 years.  During his tenure, Ted competed and was selected to sing in a national TV commercial for the Union Pacific Railroad.  Ted sang “We’re a great big rolling railroad” from the front of Union Pacific locomotive and received one dollar for his talented rendition. Ted retired at the age of sixty and started to carve intricate train models like the ones he had operated during his career.   Ted was also an avid deep-sea fisherman.  Along with his cousin, Joe Ward, they fished in the Port O’Conner, Texas waters for over 30 years.  Ted currently holds the record for the largest sheepshead fish caught in Port O’Connor.

Ted was preceded in death by his parents, George (Bus) and Vivian Brown, son Bence Allen Brown, brother Bence Brown, Sr., and sister-in-law Phyllis Brown.  Survivors include his wife Mary Brown, daughter Kristie Brown (Carter Lake, IA), son and daughter-in-law Rex and Sharon Brown (Port Charlotte, FL), grandson Bence D. Brown (Omaha, NE), granddaughter Grace Brown (Port Charlotte, FL), brother and sister-in-law Clark and Dorothy Brown (North Platte, NE), and numerous nieces, nephews, friends, and neighbors.

In Lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the 20th century Veterans Memorial.  Graveside services will be held 10:30 A.M., Saturday, August 16, 2025 at Floral Lawns Memorial Gardens.  Visitation will be held noon-7:00 P.M., Friday, August 15, 2025 at Adams & Swanson Funeral Home which is in charge of arrangements.

What a blessing it was to have you as my Uncle Ted!!! The one person who totally understood my love for Nebraska and always protected me from the attack of items when they dredged the Lake.. lol. You were so fun to be around and a great buddy to Dad as we all referred to as “The Two Grumpy Old Men”. Glad your suffering is over and you are at peace in Heaven! Love you, Julia

What I liked about Ted was he did not mince his words and said what he thought out loud. He was a caring person in spite of that.

Rest in Peace my friend.

Uncle Ted was a wonderful man that was bigger than life. I always enjoyed our fishing trips together. I was amazed at his ability to carve objects. Those huge hands could handle the smallest details. He will be missed.

Ted worked with my Dad, Morris Ferrell on the railroad. Dad said that Ted will make an excellent engineer. He did. My family became close friends with the Brown family and considered that a true blessing. I remember when all three children were born. When my husband Lloyd and I get to spend time with the Brown family, we know it will be another good memory!

Ted was my dear cousin. Born of sisters Vivian and Helen we spent our lives together from babies to late adulthood. Many good memories were shared both with Ted and his family. Later in life we fished the bays and the Gulf from the ports of Matagorda and Port O'Connor, Texas. The amount of fish we caught is staggering. Our Grandfather George Wilson and Grandmother Nellie Wilson were Nebraska homesteaders in the Arthur Co. Area. Ted and I shared the US Navy history. Mine on a USN Minesweeper and his on a USN Destroyer. We never lost the love and respect for the sea. His craftsmanship in train models and marine fish was something of genius. Two model trains grace our house and many wonderfully carved fish decorate our office.
"Fair Winds and Following Seas" to you my cousin. You will always be as close to me as a brother. Our sincere condolences to all the family.
