HILTON, Thomas William, 76, passed away in his sleep on Monday, December 27, 2021. He was preceded in death by his parents, Curtis M. and Stella C. Hilton of Pearisburg, VA. Surviving are one son, Andrew Scott Hilton of Danville, and one brother, Rev. Gerald Hilton of Richmond. Other surviving loved ones include a nephew, niece, cousins, and special friends and neighbors.
Tom, or Tommy to his friends, lived in his boyhood home in Pearisburg and attended the First Church of God. Graduating Giles High School in 1963, he was one of the track team's Cross Country State Champions. He later received a diploma from Danville Technical Institute in Air-Conditioning & Refrigeration.
Enlisting in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, he utilized those skills in Turkey for two years before serving as a Drill Sergeant in Fort Lewis, Washington. He received National Defense and Good Conduct medals prior to his Honorable Discharge. Proud of his service, Tom was a lifetime member of the Vietnam Veterans of America.
He continued working in the Heating & A/C industry, later becoming a successful salesman, until he retired. Tom enjoyed nature, fishing, camping, boating, gardening, cooking, socializing with friends and family, and spending time with special friend Linda C. Martin, and his beloved dog, Leah. The family gives special recognition to Peggy Caldwell (Tom’s “adopted sister”).
Visitation will be at Kendall Funeral Home's Chapel on Monday, January 3, 2022 at 1:00 PM, with Services at 2:00 PM. Interment to follow at Birchlawn Burial Park. In lieu of flowers, Tom requested donations be made to Pearisburg First Church of God, 1505 Wenonah Ave. Pearisburg, VA 24134. A guestbook is available by visiting www.kendallfuneralhome.com. I was so shocked to hear of Tom's sudden passing. My condolences to Linda, Peggy, Gerald and Shirley and family and Scott. I don't think Tom knew how many friends he had made over the years , but they all have the same impression of Tom; his smile and laughter and kindness . Tom has always been good to me and I have plenty of happy memories of Tom and The Hiltons.

Tommy was a lifelong friend and HS classmate. In our later years I would visit and meet him at his house and we would drive around Giles County and talk about old HS friends and all the fun we had. I will miss him dearly but his memory will always be stored in my mind.

Being a member of Tom’s family was a true pleasure. The first word that we use to describe Tom is kind and a sweet person. Always a smile and glad to see you. We will truly miss you Tom.

It is strange the first thoughts that come to mind upon hearing that a friend, former neighbor, and school classmate has passed on. Inexplicably, my first memory upon hearing of Tom's death was of sitting in a mountain cabin playing cards by the light of an old miner's carbide lamp. At ease and God's rest Soldier.

I will always have fond memories of Tom. Every year Myron and I would come down for his class reunion, for me, was like seeing old friends again. I remember Tom opening up his house for us to stay over. How thoughtful! I enjoyed Tom's company and am honored to have gotten the opportunity to get to know him. Prayers of Healing and Comfort to Tom's family and close friends!

Andrew, Gerald, and other family members being in the same HS class as Gerald, I knew Tommy and saw him in Pearisburg on visits and PHS reunions. The last one was this past August. He will be missed by many, particularly his former HS cross country running mates. I admire his service in the US Army and for that, I consider him a hero and honor him. Go easy, Soldier, and God bless your memory.

When I look back upon growing up in Pearisburg I realize how truly blessed I have been. Tommy was a big part of that. So many wonderful memories...mostly of our time in Boy Scouts. My biggest regret is that I didn't touch base with Tommy later in life. But nothing can take from me those sweet memories of my friendship with Tommy. He surely will be missed but lives in the many hearts of those he touched. May God bless you Tommy Hilton!!!!!!!!!!!!!
