Tyler David “Ty” Smathers, age 37, of Athens passed away on Easter Sunday, March 31, 2024 at Riverside Methodist Hospital, Columbus. Born Nov. 29, 1986 in Athens, he was the son of Jennifer Allen Smathers of Athens and Jack (Jenni) Smathers of Waverly.
A 2005 graduate of Alexander High School, he was employed at Mill Street Apartments for 16 years where he formed a special bond with his co-workers. Known for telling a joke, but the punch line was never revealed because Ty couldn’t stop laughing. He was kind, generous, courageous, unrelenting and selfless. He did not know a stranger and if he knew you, he really knew you and probably your sister’s husband cousin’s birthday, address and blood type also! He faced many challenges in life, most relating to his diagnosis of neurofibromatosis and complications from surgery two years ago, but Ty would never want anyone to make a fuss over him. He was fiercely independent and a loyal friend to many.
As an active community member, Ty belonged to Athens Elks Lodge 973 BPOE (where he enjoyed delivering Christmas Baskets), Paramuthia Lodge 25 F&AM, Aladdin Shrine and the Athens County Shrine Club. Ty was also a proud 2-gallon blood donor to the American Red Cross Blood Drives.
Ty is survived by his loving mother, Jennifer Smathers of Athens; his father and step mother, Jack and Jenni Smathers of Waverly; his brother Bryn and his wife Johnna of Heath, and their children, Collin and Meredith; step sister, Ashley and her husband Matt Meyer of VA, and their children Benjamin and Joshua; a brother, Jacob Smathers; paternal grandparents, Jerry and Joann Smathers of Athens; aunts and uncles, Jeannie & Jeff Jenkins, Jill and Richard Meadows, Jerry David Smathers, and David Allen; also surviving are several cousins.
He is preceded in death by maternal grandparents, Norman and Mary Allen; and a step brother, Zachariah Reed Musser.
Funeral service will be conducted Friday, April 5th at 11:00 a.m. at Christ Community Wesleyan Church, Rt. 50 West, Albany with Pastor Phil Foster and Pastor Bert Christian officiating. Burial will be in Bates Church Cemetery, Alexander Township. Friends may call Thursday from 4-8 p.m. at the church. Paramuthia Lodge will conduct Masonic Rites Thursday at 8:00 p.m. at the church. Arrangements are with Jagers & Sons Funeral Home, Athens. Please share a memory, a note of condolence or sign the online register at www.jagersfuneralhome.com. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Athens County Chapter of the American Red Cross, 100 S. May Ave., #A, Athens, OH 45701 or Paramuthia Lodge 25 F&AM, 12 W. Carpenter St., Athens, OH 45701. Memo line, In Memory of Tyler Smathers.

This community has lost the kindest, funniest soul. I first met Ty when I worked at O'Bleness and he was a volunteer. As with everyone he met, we became instant friends. We shared many laughs over the years and I admired his courageous spirit. May he rest in peace in God's loving arms. My love to Jen and his entire family.

I am so sorry for your loss. Thoughts and prayers for sure!
Ty was truly a pillar within the community. A pillar of love, laughter, compassion and resilience. Ty was and always will be a legend admired by so many!
He would always ask my mom "Didi" with a mile long grin, to run away with him and that Willy (my dad) would get over it and wouldn't mind! Just a 30+ year difference there.

I have many memories of Ty, but the best was his personality and loving ways he had towards life and people. He was quite a young man to know and love, he shared his inspiration with many friends he made throughout his life. May he now rest in peace in heaven. My prayers and condolences to Ty's family. God's blessings to each of you.

Heaven gained an amazing angel on Easter Sunday. God needed Ty home to shed his light down on all of us from above as he did down here everyday! I think the words from Vince Gill's song "Go rest high on that mountain...son...your work on Earth is done!" Is most fitting for Ty. He touch so many lives & brought so much joy to so many by just being Ty. To know him was to love him...he will always be remembered with love & a smile!
My deepest sympathies to you, Jennifer ...Ty couldn't have had a more caring & loving Mom. May you find peace & comfort from those who loved Ty as they share their stories & memories with you! I am deeply sorry for your loss!! He will be missed!!

Ty was an inspiration to all the staff at the Survivorship Clinic at Nationwide Children's Hospital. He always arrived with a smile and usually a new story to tell. He brightened our day. The ongoing memory challenge we gave Ty many years ago was to remember three objects and to tell us each visit: Phone, Microscope, and Pen. he never missed it once. Our hearts are sad. Good thoughts to all his friends and family.

Ty was such a kind soul who didn't know a stranger. We would always see him at Walmart or when I would get my sweet tea fix from Sonic he would stop and talk to me at the drive through. Ty will be missed dearly, my heart goes out to his momma and the rest of his family. Sending lots of love, hugs and prayers during this difficult time.

I met Ty when my bike broke down in front of Mill Street Apartments. He got it going for me, and, thereafter, if it broke down when he was around, he always helped get it going. I remember his riding around in his motorized wheelchair also, but whenever we bumped into each other, we would always chat a few moments. His was a friendly and familiar face and I am so sorry to hear that he had not been well, but Rest easy Ty. You were one of the good guys.

Ty introduced me as his Fiance to everyone if we were sitting and talking. He use to ride his scooter to my past employment and ask my coworkers to speak to his fiance Dani. Coworkers came to me saying some guy was asking for me. I had no idea who it was. As soon as I walked out to see, he giggled so much and his smile was so big. We'd hugged and laugh together.
He was always such a bright light and loving. I know I'll miss our talks and our "honeymoon" plans.
Miss you my friend and Fiance.

Ty always had a story or joke to tell always wearing a smile and would always brighten up the day in the Plaza barber shop. He will live forever through stories from the barbershop and (he also cut one head of hair in there one day ) we had a lot of laughs that day and many others too . Ty also made up funny memes of Barney Fife he printed out that are still on the wall today . Ty will be missed .Prayers to the family.

Wow what a super young man. Ty over the number of years that I was fortunate to know him there never seemed to be bad day! His ability to always have a kind word when he would confront you on the street, store, at our therapy clinic there was always that great smile and a positive thought. His 37 years of life were tremendous demonstrations of, though handicapped, life was worth living to always have a positive impact every day.
I so admired him.
My sincere condolences to Tyler's family and friends.

Ty could be seen rolling on Stimson Ave. and so many other places in Athens. I especially remember Ty petting one of my foster dogs at a doggy ‘meet and greet’ at The Market on State. You could tell he was truly an animal lover. Tyler will be missed.

I am so sorry for your loss. Ty was always a perfect gentleman, he was genuine, kind and giving, I will never forget him. One morning Ty and I were both waiting for the OUCU to open and he offered to stand and let me sit on his scooter. I walk with a cane and standing in place very long is hard, I told him I appreciated his offer but I would be okay. Just the fact that he offered it was so touching to me, with all of the medical problems he had he was willing to stand for me.

Jenn & Family, My heart & sympathies go out to each of you ❤ I always loved seeing Ty out & about when he was able to. If he seen ya he was spinning his wheelchair out to get to ya to say "Hello & tell ya a joke. He was & always will be such a loving, generous, caring soul. He had many battles that he dealt with, but always had the biggest smile that just drew a person in. The last time I seen y'all he wasn't able to speak or walk but he spoke with his eyes. The eyes that shined brighter than most. He was & always will be a special friend to me.... May you rest peacefully, Ty, in Jesus's loving arms ❤ I'll miss you sweet friend❤

I met Ty when he walked through the door of my office looking for a job 18 yrs ago.
All he wanted in life was to have a purpose, be independent, make people laugh, be friends with everyone and to be loved by all.His generosity was larger than anyone I’ve ever know. I loved him like a son and my kids thought of him as their brother. He will be deeply missed and he will always be in my heart. My heart goes out to the family❤

Tyler always made a day a little brighter with his smile. He could turn any frown into a smile just by being in the same room. He had the gift of giving love to everyone God blessed him with that gift and he shared it every day in just being Tyler. He will be missed but he is in a much better place and is now in a strong body playing all the sports he wanted to while he was here on earth.
