I called upon my “Master” and he heard my final cry. It is well with my soul.
Mr. Walter Avery "Waller", unexpectantly entered into eternal rest on May 13, 2025 at his home. Walter was born on July 17, 1937 to the late Patrick and Virginia Goode Avery in Petersburg, Virginia. He was educated in the Petersburg Public School System.
Walter worked for Amsted Rail which manufactures bearings for freight trains (Brenco) for a total of 33 years prior to retiring in 1999. Walter was a die-hard COWBOYS fan, he enjoyed spending time with his friends, watching westerns and he loved sweets.
Walter "Waller" was preceded in death by his parents, Patrick and Virginia Goode Avery; brothers, Patrick, Carroll, Rochester and William Avery of Petersburg, Virginia; granddaughter, Latrice M Bates of Petersburg, Virginia; brother-in-law, Mr. Johnnie Russell, Sr. of Fayetteville North Carolina; nephews, Louis Avery, Jr. of Atlanta, Georgia and Johnnie Russell, Jr. of Fayetteville, North Carolina; and his sister-in-law, Ms. Rita N Avery of Petersburg, Virginia.
Left to cherish his memory are his five children, Denice R Avery (Randy) of Petersburg Virginia, Gwendolyn A. Fisher (Rev. Armstead) of Norfolk Virginia, Darlene A. Perry (Willie) of Chester, Virginia, Jovat A. Bates (Clinton affectionally called Big Willie by Walter) and Cardell Avery Winfield of Raeford, North Carolina; and his fur son whom he loved dearly, Whisper Bates (Old Man).; sisters, Ethel Harwell (Walter) of Oxon Hill, Maryland, Sylvia Russell of Fayetteville, North Carolina, and Helen Bush of Petersburg, Virginia; brother, Louis Avery of Fayetteville, North Carolina; and his sister-in-law, Ms. Christine Avery of Petersburg Virginia. Waller was blessed with eleven grandchildren, Jaquay Avery of Norfolk, Virginia, Shammara Avery of Petersburg, Virginia, Clinton Bates (Darlene) of Petersburg, VA, Latreska Cade of Petersburg, Virginia, Vincent Avery, Rev. Charity Fisher of Norfolk, Virginia, Shaquell Avery of Petersburg, Virginia, Dana Perry of Chester, Virginia, Tiffani Perry of Petersburg, Virginia, J’Lynn of Raleigh, North Carolina and Ivory Winfield of Raeford, North Carolina; thirteen great grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, cousins and lifelong friends.
In my father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you, I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye maybe also. St. John 14: 2-3.
Services will be held 11:00 A.M., Friday, May 23, 2025, at Third Baptist Church, 550 Farmer Street, Petersburg, VA, the Rev. Kassandra Bullock, Pastor, and Ms. Latrell Bush, eulogist. The interment to follow at Dinwiddie Memorial Park.
