Walter worked for Amsted Rail which manufactures bearings for freight trains (Brenco) for a total of 33 years prior to retiring in 1999. Walter was a die-hard COWBOYS fan, he enjoyed spending time with his friends, watching westerns and he loved sweets.

Perry (Willie) of Chester, Virginia, Jovat A. Bates (Clinton affectionally called Big Willie by Walter) and Cardell Avery Winfield of Raeford, North Carolina; and his fur son whom he loved dearly, Whisper Bates (Old Man).; sisters, Ethel Harwell (Walter) of Oxon Hill, Maryland, Sylvia Russell of Fayetteville, North Carolina, and Helen Bush of Petersburg, Virginia; brother, Louis Avery of Fayetteville, North Carolina; and his sister-in-law, Ms. Christine Avery of Petersburg Virginia. In my father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would  have told you, I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye maybe also. St. John 14: 2-3.
