Carmela Jean (Costa ) McDowell
February 11, 1933 - November 22, 2017
Midmorning on November 22nd, Carmela passed away while in Penrose Hospital Hospice in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Carmela was born in El Moro, Colorado on February 11, 1933 to Alex and Arlien Costa. She was the oldest of five children - one sister and three brothers. She graduated from Springer High School in 1950. She went on to nursing school in Pueblo, Colorado and graduated from the DePaul School of Nursing at Corwin Hospital on December 27, 1953.
Carmela met Richard McDowell in Pueblo, Colorado on March 25, 1954, and they were married on September 11th that same year at St. Leander Church in Pueblo, Colorado.
She worked primarily in health care as a Registered Nurse at Colorado State Hospital, Cedar Springs Mental Hospital and then finished her career at the Medallion Retirement Community.
She enjoyed musicals, crossword puzzles and a good movie. She read copiously and was always on the lookout for quips, quotes and witty sayings that she could add to her collection. Her journals strongly indicate her deep love for her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She created countless records of their accomplishments and struggles. She was such a private person that much of this was just discovered after her death.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Richard McDowell. She is survived by her five children, Alexia, Dennis, Jama, Maralee and Jeana, as well as ten grandchildren and an ever-increasing number of great grandchildren.
In a recently discovered document, Carmela wrote "All of you are winners. You each make life interesting, fun and so worth it all. We love you very much."
A memorial service and reception will be held 2:00 PM, Friday, December 1st, 2017 at Mountain View Mortuary, 2350 Montebello Square Drive, Colorado Springs.
