Lucille Cunningham Obituary

Cunningham
LUCILLE DOROTHY CUNNINGHAM
May 2, 1925
November 14, 2019
Lucille Dorothy (Brockman) Cunningham was born at home in Monroe, Nebraska on May 2, 1925, the first child of Henry and Dorothy Brockman.
Lucille attended country schools, and graduated from Fullerton High School in 1943.
Lucille taught in rural schools around Fullerton until meeting returning decorated WW2 veteran, Lemoyne R. Cunningham. The two were married in Fullerton, Nebraska on June,1947. They moved to Wayne, Nebraska in 1950 where Lucille taught in the rural schools. The couple adopted their son, Mark Allan, in 1955 and built a new home on an acreage south of Wayne.
They later moved to Blair, Nebraska. Lucille obtained her degree at Wayne State College and began teaching in the Blair Public Schools. She later attended the University of Nebraska-Omaha, graduating with a Master of Science in Special Education.
In 1971 the family moved to Colorado Springs, Colorado. They bought and operated several apartment complexes. Lucille also served as President of the AAUW.
In the 80's the couple built a winter home in Mesa, Arizona. Lucille, with her son Mark, founded the West One Group, redeveloping/operating residential and commercial properties in west Colorado Springs. Lucille served as President of the Old Colorado City Historical Society, where she led the effort to acquire, fund and restore the historic First Baptist Church into an office/museum/archive for the Society.
Lucille lived her last decade and a half in the home she'd built in Kissing Camels Estates. She loved it's patios, waterfalls and gardens, as well as painting in her art studio.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Lemoyne; two children who died shortly after birth; both of her parents; two sisters and both brothers.
Lucille is survived by her son, Mark; and a sister, Irlavere.

How I’d like to hear Lucille’s opinions on pandemics, teaching online, elections, and so much more. This “can do” lady might well have ideas that would inspire us to bigger and better things.

Lucille was instrumental in accessing and purchasing the building on 1 South 24th that became the Old Colorado City Historical Society. With a dedicated group of enthusiasts, she oversaw the old church's renovation and helped direct its progress into a repository for artifacts and research pertinent to the 1859-1917 life of Colorado City.

We who continue Lucille's work are thankful for her foresight and leadership as we strive to build on the foundation she helped lay.
