It's particularly fitting that Mary Endres should again be remembered at a time when book-banning sentiments are again being heard across the land and students in Texas are showing more sense than their elders in opposing such initiatives. Miss Endres was a strong voice for the value of literature and, as I noted in an earlier remembrance, a big influence on me during my senior year in high school. I cherish my memory of her.

Miss Endres was my English teacher my senior year at Zion-Benton (1962-63) and my favorite teacher that year. She was partly responsible for my going on to an English major at the University of Illinois. I liked her very much and have often wondered what became of her. I'd be interested in sharing memories with any other former students or acquaintances of hers. She was a special person.

Mary and Michael are one of the few happy memories if my childhood. It was tough back then.

Miss Endres will be remembered with respect and affection by the many students she taught at Zion-Benton high school. Her warmth of manner and passion for the power of language remains in the lives she touched.
When ZB graduates reflect on which teachers most empowered their education, Miss Endres name is always prominent.
