Carroll Orville Sorensen
May 5, 1924 - March 9, 2018
Carroll Orville Sorensen, age 93, died on March 9, 2018 at a local hospital. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend who was retired from the El Paso County Transportation Department.
Carroll was born one of ten children on a farm near St. Edward, Nebraska on May 5, 1924 to Antone and Laurine (Andersen) Sorensen. He grew up in this Danish Community and then went off to serve his country in the Navy during World War II. He served aboard the USS Benson and traveled around the world in transportation of American troops. After the war he returned home, worked on the farm, and later moved to Colorado Springs in 1951.
He married Rita Scoggin on August 9, 1952. He worked various jobs with a gasoline station and then an ice cream truck before he was hired as a heavy equipment operator for El Paso County Transportation Department. He loved his job and worked for the county from 1962 to 1988.
He was a man of family and faith who was a member of First Evangelical Free Church in Colorado Springs. He was also a member of the American Legion, the Sons of Norway, the Masonic Lodge, and World War II Veterans. He loved gold panning, hunting, fishing, and his coin collection.
Rita died on June 15, 1997 and Carroll married Phyllis "Lorraine" Balistreri on December 9, 1997 in the Cayman Islands. Lorraine and Carroll had a wonderful life in retirement and traveled the world. They enjoyed family reunions, fishing, and the mountains of Buena Vista where they had a retirement home.
Lorraine died on October 6, 2015 and Carroll stayed active with his senior lunch friends at the church and tinkering in his shop.
He is preceded in death by his siblings, Vernon, Alva, Amy, Irving, Arvid, Allen, Dennis, and Marjorie; and his son-in-law, Mel Tolbert.
Carroll is survived by his daughters, Dianna Tolbert of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Sharon (Tom) Miller of Crane Hill, Alabama, and Sandra (Jim) Simmons of Cumming, Georgia; his sister, Josephine (Ted) Truxell of Pueblo, Colorado; brother, Glenn M. (Violet) Sorensen of Lincoln, Nebraska; three grandchildren; three great- grandchildren; and twenty-eight nieces and nephews.
