Charlotta Marie (Frye) Burton
July 24, 1930 - May 11, 2018
Charlotta Marie Frye Burton passed away peacefully on Friday May 11, 2018 in Colorado Springs after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease.
Charlotta was born to Esther (Olin) and Walter Frye on July 24, 1930 in Wooster, Ohio. Char, as she was known, was the youngest of five children and the only girl. She attended school in a one room school house in Wooster and graduated from Wooster High School in 1947 at the age of 16. Char continued her education at the University of Cincinnati School of Nursing in Cincinnati, Ohio. She graduated in 1951 from the University of Cincinnati with a Bachelors of Science in Nursing. While at college Charlotta met her dear friend Irma (Brown) Wheelwright. Upon graduation these young ladies decided that they were moving out west. They both secured nursing jobs at the Weld County General Hospital in Greeley, Colorado.
It was in Greeley that Charlotta met Nelson Burton. They were married on June 14, 1953 in Wooster, Ohio. They made their home in Englewood, Colorado where Char worked at Porter Adventist Hospital. They were blessed with two sons, Grant and Danny, in Englewood. Nelson's job took them to Colorado Springs where they have lived ever since. There they were blessed with three more children Lee, Nancy and Sally.
Char was a stay at home mom while the children were young. She eventually took a job as a nurse at the Colorado Springs Day Nursery. She also worked part time at H&R Block for thirty years.
Charlotta was active in the Izaak Walton League of America and a life member of the Garden of the Gods Chapter. She held offices in the local chapter, was a past president of the State Division, a National Director, and Regional Governor at the national Level. She and Nelson traveled to many locations across the country to attend meetings and conventions held by the Izaak Walton League. The league was a legacy handed down by her father who, at one time, was the National President.
She was also an active member of the Zebulon Pike Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Char enjoyed history and was very interested in the Santa Fe Trail so she became a member of the Santa Fe Trail Association. She was also a member of the United Methodist Women's Joy Circle at the First United Methodist Church in Colorado Springs.
Charlotta was preceded in death by her parents, mother and father-in-law, her brothers Karl and wife Betty, Richard, Eugene and wife Mary, Calvin and wife Dotty, and David; son Danny; and one granddaughter Allyson Blackwell.
Charlotta is survived by her husband of almost 65 years, Nelson; sons, Grant (Cheryl) of Westminster, Lee (Sharon) of Divide; daughters, Nancy (Zane) Brewer of Guymon, Oklahoma and Sally (Tom) McIntyre of Ft. Collins; grandchildren, Katie (Kevin) Dodson, Matthew (Krystal) Burton, Mike (Erin) Burton, Stephen (Sarah) Judah, Rachel (Jake) Sokol, Zachary Brewer, Travis Brewer, Nicholas Brewer, Sarah McIntyre, Nathan McIntyre and Ryan McIntyre; 11 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and dear friend, Irma Wheelwright.
Memorial service will be held 11:00 am Friday May 18 at the First United Methodist Church (420 N. Nevada Ave.) in the Lehmberg Chapel.
Flowers may be sent to the First United Methodist Church. Memorial contributions be made to The Izaak Walton League of America or New Century Hospice of Colorado Springs in memory of Charlotta Burton.
