COYLA JEANE (FIELDS) SEXSON
August 23, 1921
October 27, 2018
A long life well lived. A quiet life of family and friends.
Coyla Jeane Fields was born on August 23, 1921, in Waverly, Iowa. She was the daughter of Dr. William Harry Fields, DDS and Bess E. Fields of Clarksville, Iowa, with younger brother James completing the family.
Just prior to the start of WWII, the family moved to Denver, Colorado, where her father was the head of the dental department at Fitzsimons General Hospital. There she met her future husband, Julius C. (Bill) Sexson, DDS, a recent graduate from dental school.
After a whirlwind courtship, Jeane traveled alone to Philadelphia, where Bill was stationed. There she and Bill were married on January 18, 1942. When Bill was sent overseas in November of that year, Jeane returned to her parents in Colorado for the remainder of the war. For the following 30 years, Jeane was the quintessential military wife, being a gracious hostess and creating a special home for her family wherever she and Bill were stationed. She especially enjoyed their assignments in Germany and in Hawaii. Throughout this time, with a great deal of humor and love, she raised her four children, William (Bill), Susan, Jane, and Sara.
Following Bill's death in 1981, Jeane married her long time friend, Bob Walsh, also a career dentist in the Army, in 1984. Following Bob's death, she met John Devitt, a dear friend, with whom she enjoyed spending time for the remaining years of her life.
Jeane was a Delta Gamma and a 52 year member of Chapter DS of P.E.O. She maintained a large circle of friends from her days as a military wife. She continued to love to travel with family and friends and her final trip was a 10 day cruise of the Caribbean in January.
Jeane is survived by her four children, and by 9 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren who all knew her as "Granny." She is also survived by her special friend, John Devitt, and her nieces and nephew.
