As a child, I didnt like the news. When I bought my first home at age 32, I had a small TV that didnt get many channels. It did get the PBS channel 13 and it was there that I met Messrs. Lehrer and MacNeil during the MacNeil Lehrer News Hour. I fell in love with the news because of the elegant, kind and straight forward way they presented it. No left or right wing stances for them! No loud, blowhard styles! Only quiet, respectful elegance and factual news. I WAS HOOKED. My thanks to "Robin" and Jim. Well done! You made a big difference in my life. None have, or ever will, report the news like you. I always felt like I knew you. I am thankful for the many ways you enriched my life and educated me. You opened my eyes to the world.

Jim Lehrer set the gold standard for fair-minded journalism. His integrity was above reproach and it shone forth with every newscast. As someone who was interviewed by him many times over close to a 25 year period, I knew he would ask tough questions while always remaining civil. He had this way of making you feel utterly at ease but you knew his expectations of you were always high. You never wanted to disappoint Jim Lehrer. I pray his journalistic legacy will endure the turbulence of todays polarization an era where people expect cable channels of choice to reinforce and not challenge your own views.
One anecdote I will always remember. My wife was seated next to him at a dinner party and she clearly didnt know many of the people. Jim insisted on pointing out everyone around the table so she would feel comfortable. He was a prince of a person apart from his outstanding professionalism. I will truly miss him.

I met Jim when he interviewed me in the summer of 1970 at Southern Methodist University in Dallas. I was a participant in a program called Project Upward Bound, a college prep program for low income students. He apparently liked my interview so much, he invited me to come on his KERA -TV "Newsroom" program, to talk about the program and explain the benefits to the participants.

Upon completing my appearance, Jim asked if I would be interested in working with him as a high school activities reporter where I would report on high school activities and youth in Dallas. I jumped at the opportunity and was most appreciative that he allowed me to work until I graduated high school and went off to college in 1971.

Jim was a consummate professional and a wonderful mentor. My condolences and prayers go out to his family. Thank you for sharing Jim with all of us. He will forever be in our hearts.

I always enjoyed watching the MacNeil/Lehrer Report, then the Lehrer Report. Mr. Lehrer reported the news without the hysterics & drama of today's "reporters". I always came away learning about both sides of an issue. He brought about a civility which is sorely lacking in today's "news" shows. May God grant His peace to the Lehrer family.

Jim was the total professional. He took time to mentor younger journalists. He spoke to Journalism students and English students over five decades. He was constantly helping young people move forward in their career paths. Jim was also great Novelist and an icon on the Jim Lehrer News Hour and as co-anchor of the McNeil-Lehrer Show. Jim lived a full life and influenced three generations of journalists. He shone a light on major stories of national and international interest. He broke many stories covering Watergate, the Vietnam War and Wars in Iraq, Syria and Afghanistan. He covered genocide and starvation and poverty in Africa. He brought home his life experiences in covering poverty and homelessness, here, in the United States. Jim provided important perspective on the news for five decades. RIP JIM. Condolences to his family, friends and associates. Jim left an indelible imprint as a solid journalist and great role model as a true professional handling many presidential debates. He will be missed.

I began watching Jim Lehrer in the late 70s when I was a teenager. He and Robert MacNeil formed my expectations of how a reporter should present the news. Jim Lehrer was a welcomed guest into my home nightly until his well earned retirement. Hearing the sound of his voice during Judys segment last night was like hearing the voice of a loved and much missed family member. My condolences, together with my utmost respect and gratitude.

Jim Lehrer was an extraordinary patriot, journalist and role model. One of the last true journalists who believed reporting factual events objectively and fairly was his true calling and duty. I became a news "fan" with the MacNeil/Lehrer Report and continued with Mr. Lehrer until his retirement. I rarely watch the biased and slanted "progressive" sound bites called "news" today.
Thank you, Mr. Lehrer. You will not be forgotten....

Mr. Lerner was a trusted source of accuracy and knowledge regarding news of the day.
His insight was of great value to me in understanding the broader complexities of any issue that cropped up. Wars, legislation, societal reactions, economic outcomes etc. etc. Mr Lehrer was there to explain its complexities to me.
I am forever grateful to him and Robyn McNeil for their passion of presenting the news to the public in an unfiltered, clean, clear and precise way. He has been an invaluable mentor to all who have joined TheNews Hour (in its many phases over the years)
He has been and will be truly missed.
