Lacy III
Lester "Dan" Lacy III
July 26, 1940 - June 6, 2018
Lester "Dan" Lacy III died on June 6, 2018 in Oklahoma City. He was born July 26, 1940 to Ada Josephine Campbell Lacy and Lester Daniel Lacy, Jr. in Oklahoma City. He graduated from Northwest Classen High School in 1958. From there, Dan went on to graduate from Oklahoma State University in 1963 with a BA in Radio & Television while working at KVRO, KOSU and KSPI radio stations as an announcer and engineer. A proud veteran, Dan served in the Air National Guard and the Air Force Reserves. In 1968, he joined his namesakes, L.D. Lacy and L. Dan Lacy at Central National Bank, but in 1970 he left banking to follow his dream. At age 30, Dan bought his first radio station, KIIX, in Fort Collins, CO, and then KIIQ in Colorado Springs, KFTN in Salt Lake City, KWXA in Durango, CO, and KVYT in Aspen, CO. By the time he was 34, Dan rated a full page in Barron's National Business Weekly for his talent and hard work by buying low, building up and selling high. Dan did a lot of traveling between stations but made his longtime home in Colorado Springs where he served on various broadcaster associations and community endeavors. Dan was also on the Board of ABC Radio Affiliates Association and served on the CO Municipal Bond Supervision Advisory Board. He enjoyed being an announcer for CO State University and Air Force Academy football games. He loved to hunt, fish, snow ski, find wild mushrooms and travel in his RV, usually with his black lab by his side. Always "loyal and true" he remained a true OSU Cowboy. He received the Alumnus of Distinction Award for Journalism and Broadcasting in 1998 and enjoyed watching OSU football. He was rarely seen without his orange OSU ball cap. Dan was also a 32nd Degree Mason, joining in Stillwater and continuing in Colorado Springs. Dan was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Josephine Ann (Jo Ann) Lacy Graham; grandparents from OKC and First Families of Oklahoma (before statehood); great-grandparents, Lacy, Olney, Smith, Campbell and Fowler. He is survived by his son, Allen Richard Lacy of Jacksonville, FL; sister, Sherry and husband Russell Lawson of OKC; brother, William Richard "Bill" Lacy of Lauderdale by the Sea, FL; and many nieces and nephews. Dan returned to Oklahoma his last several months where he received incredible loving care under the supervision of Diane Timmerman. Thank you, Jenny Chasenah, Tony Martinez, Gilda Jamison and Andrea Star. Memorial services will be 10am, Monday, June 11 at Church of the Servant Chapel of the Cross, 14343 N. MacArthur, OKC. Burial will be in the Seneca Cemetery, Seneca, MO. Donations in his memory may be made to Oklahoma State University or Colorado State University.
