Michael English Obituary

Michael D. English, passed away January 26, 2016 while on a diving trip in the Cayman Islands celebrating his 30th wedding anniversary. He was born in Joplin, Missouri November 22, 1961 to Shirley English and the late Bob English.

Mike graduated from Regis University in Colorado Springs, Colorado and Parkwood High School in Joplin, Missouri. He loved anything outdoors and was an avid hunter and fisherman. He was passionate about the Olympic sports movement and fierce in his love and dedication to putting the athlete first. Most importantly he wanted to be the best father, husband, son and brother he could be and a friend to all. He was always there to listen and offer one of his many quotes.

Mike leaves behind his wife Ana English (Hogrefe); daughter Amber and son Joshua; mother Shirley; brother Butch (Kim, Dustin, Megan) English; several aunts and uncles; and all his in-laws, nephews, nieces, cousins and many friends we considered family as well.

Mike's Celebration of Life will take place Monday, February 8, 2016 at 2:00 pm at The Pinery at the Hill, 775 W Bijou St, Colorado Springs, CO 80905

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the pending Mike English Memorial Foundation with a mission to directly support athletes pursuing their dream or the Mule Deer Foundation. Information regarding the Mike English Memorial Foundation will be available soon.

Not sure what to say?

It is hard to believe it has been 6 years. I think of Mike quite a lot. It was a Friend and Mentor to me during the time we worked together at Quantum. We had a lot of tough conversations about our families especially our children. I really miss him.

Michael was such a diplomatic and caring guy. He was more than helpful to me as I fulfilled my role as CEO of several NGBs. It seems he has been gone for a long while now, but, still, he was very impactful and memorable to many of us NGB types.

Butch,

I am very saddened to learn of the passing of your brother Mike. Looking through the photo album certainly reminded me of the fun times at the OTC in the early days as well as the "Nasty Habits" we had for wining. It is nice reading the warm, heartfelt words of others and certainly says a lot about how Mike lived his life, he will be missed. You, your mom and family are in my thoughts.

I saw Mike every month for at least 25 years now. He talked about everything from how proud he was of Josh settling down and figuring out what he is going to do and Amber getting mentally ready for the 2nd half of her shooting contest in a few months. We talked about how we married the best spouses in the world and it was great they put up with us. He got a Christmas tree for us when we used the Chicago apartment (so sweet). Last month he was so psyched about the diving trip and we viewed the hummingbird videos he made when he went to help Butch out in Pagosa when all hell broke loose. We both wanted to be on that porch watching the birds. He was telling me about how much he loved Ana and how things were going to change during this year 2016 concerning his life and job. He was bragging about Ana and some great work stuff she was doing. Mike was pure of heart, very caring, smart and ornery. He was a mentor/buddy and a straight shooter. I was looking forward to his expose book he planned to write. His death upset me as much as my own mother's death last month. He was in his prime and he did everything he wanted to w/his family's blessing; nothing stopped him. I admired him greatly and appreciated his contribution to those he came into contact with. I will be waiting for you to come in every month around 7:30 pm for years to come, probably forever. Ana, Amber, Josh, your dad and family really rocks, thanks for the memories. I love you all. Ana, Josh, and Amber

I don't think I have met any of you but I certainly knew Mike. We met for breakfast at Wooglins several weeks ago and had a nice rehash of our past histories....his as an athlete and policy setter for USA Shooting and as rather high level employee at the USOC and mine as an administrator for four NGBs. Periodically over the past 25 years we would sit down and Mike would provide common sense counsel. He was incredibly helpful and always a willing listener. Mike was big fun, bright, with distinct opinions, and was a sportsman. It was a privilege to have known him.

I have not seen or spoken to Mike in years, but my recollections of him from high school are of an honest, straightforward, highly intelligent guy who did the right thing when it was important to do so. I was very, very proud to know and be associated with him. He was an example then for all of us, and he still is. Thank you Mike, you will always be remembered.

Our prayers go out to all of Mike's family. I remember when as at the AMU and introduced airgun Running Target to a group of Daisy shooters. I have a picture of me with the RT rifle and Mike in the background. He and Butch really got into Running Target.

Ana, Amber and Joshua,
I wanted you to know that Mike walked into my life at a turning point for me. He hired me to work at Quantum. He saw something in me that I did not see myself. That was 18 years ago. If it were not for him, I would not have been able to grow into the person I am today.
Mike had a true calling, and I am blessed that he saw me.
Please accept my most sincere thoughts and love for the man you cherished. He will remembered by so many, and I am so happy to be part of his journey.

Your dad was a fantastic leader and great friend. With Mike at the helm, you knew he had your back and you wanted to work harder for him. His smile could light the darkest of days and his kindness was unsurpassed. May you find comfort in the memories and the legacy he leaves behind. I'm looking forward to celebrating him today.

Ana, Amber, Josh and family. My heartfelt sympathy for your loss. Taken too young but will always be remembered for the family man and friend he was. Mike, I will always be thankful for our time together at DEC and Quantum but will particularly remember those good times chasing birds on the plains and the call of the Wapiti in the high mountains. Rest in peace my friend.
