Laverne Champion Obituary

Laverne Champion, age 97, of Anniston, Alabama passed away on Sunday, January 19, 2025. Laverne was born in Clay County AL. Laverne is survived by her daughters Jerri Nell Woodard, Karen Jean Champion, her grandchildren Phillip Woodard (Cindy), Tammy Moreno (Ron), Jeffrey Woodard (Kim), Connie Champion, David Champion (Crystal), Fredrick Becker and Tiffanie Becker and numerous great grandchildren, daughter-in-law Karen L. Champion. Laverne was preceded in death by her husband Hayden Champion; her son Hayden Terry Champion and her son-in-law Leon Woodard; her parents Joseph and Emma Worthy; her sisters Myrtle Vickers, Tula Wilson, Nell Worthy, Jewel Denson, Mildred Cash, Peggy Key and Joy Brown, and her brothers Dallas, Joseph, Jack and Bobby Worthy. Funeral services for Laverne will be Friday, January 24, 2025 at 2:00 PM at Gray Brown Service Mortuary with Rev. James Abernathy, Rev. Ron Moreno and Connie Champion officiating. Burial will follow at Forestlawn Gardens. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Serving as pallbearers are Grandsons. Laverne Champion could be described as a faithful follower of Christ. She loved people and her primary purpose in life was to share the gospel. She was instrumental in starting the Calhoun County Jail Ministry and spent over 55 years going each week to share the gospel with the inmates. She loved unconditionally. She served in many churches throughout her life and loved her family and always enjoyed family dinners. More particularly, she enjoyed dinners at the old country home in Clay County. Family and friends from miles away would celebrate Thanksgiving together in the "country' as it was commonly referred to.
