Mitchell Alfson Obituary

Mitchell Jay Alfson, 65, of West Lafayette, IN, passed away at his home on Saturday, October 25, 2025.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Tuesday, November 4th, at 2 p.m. at the American Legion Post #492 in West Lafayette, IN.
Mitch was born on February 14, 1960, in Arcata, CA, to the late William (Bill) and Beverly (Dahl) Alfson. In 1972, his father, Bill, married Deloris Heppler, adding four more children to the family.
Mitch grew up primarily in Madison and Lake Preston, SD, and graduated from Lake Preston High School in 1979.
Mitch was the life of every gathering-always ready with a joke or a quick-witted remark.
He had a lifelong passion for trucking, a career he pursued for many years before working as a Service Manager for Bob Rohrman Automotive. He was a proud member of the American Legion Post #492, where he served honorably on the Military Honor Guard.
He loved hunting, fishing, gardening, and lending a hand to anyone who needed help fixing a vehicle. Above all, he treasured time spent with family and friends, who will deeply miss his humor, kindness, and big heart.
Mitch is survived by his children, Regina (Justin) Alfson of Illinois; Cory (Megan) Oehlerts of Minnesota; Davina (Joshua) Winkler of Indiana; Angelea (Randall) Gard of Arkansas; and Dillon (Kristen) Shuck of Indiana.
He was a proud "Grandpa Mitch" to his grandchildren, Zach and Luke Oehlerts; Ezekiel and Xavier Winkler; and Eve, Eli, and Hana Shuck.
He is also survived by his siblings, Alan (Lori) Alfson of Arizona, Jayme (Rebecca) Trygstad of South Dakota, Kevin (Julie) Heppler of South Dakota, Marcus (Cindy) Heppler of South Dakota, Jerome Heppler of South Dakota, and Taleesia Heppler of South Dakota; along with numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his stepmother, Deloris Alfson; his sister, Lynnette Taylor; brother-in-law, Bill Taylor; nephew, Dusty Keppen, and his beloved dog Buddy.
Mitch will be forever remembered for his generous spirit, laughter, and the joy he brought to everyone around him.
