Chong Shively Obituary

Chong Sun "Kim" Shively

October 10, 1943 - March 29, 2026

Chicago, Illinois - Kim Chong Sun (Kim "Kimmie" Shively) born October 10, 1943, by the ocean in Masan, South Korea, died March 29, 2026, in Chicago, IL.

Kim often spoke fondly about her simple and happy childhood in South Korea. Although separated from her family for a time during the Korean War, she was reunited with her parents and brothers, and extended family that lived in Seoul. She met the love of her life, John Shively, while he was stationed at Yongsan Army Base and they were married in Belleville, Illinois in 1973. They traveled the world together along with their son, Michael "Mike", and daughter, Catherine "Cathy/Cat." In addition to Korea, they lived in Japan, The Philippines, Okinawa, Germany, and finally in retirement settled back in Belleville. John and Kim had a great time traveling all over the US. After John's passing, Kim spent time living in Chicago with daughter Cat and her son in-law, Brian. Cat also took her traveling all over the United States. It is no exaggeration that she was loved by everyone who was lucky enough to meet her. She was as colorful as any rainbow. She loved nature and the outdoors and was always up for an adventure. She also loved animals and children. Kim was an amazingly talented artist, singer, and managed to spread love and happiness to everyone she encountered. She was truly a beautiful, magical lady.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers; her son; and her husband.

She is survived by her daughter, Cat, and son in-law Brian; her brother Kim Jong Ho; her sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law; many cousins; nieces and nephews; and friends. They will miss her dearly and carry her joy in their hearts.
