John Van Schaick Obituary

John Van Schaick
Born: December 19, 1947
Died: August 21, 2025
With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of John A. Van Schaick, who left us peacefully on August 21, 2025, at the age of 77. A beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, he leaves behind a legacy of love, quiet strength, and deep appreciation for life's simple joys.
Visitation for John will be held Monday, August 25th, from 9:00 AM until Noon, at the Barto Funeral Home in Spring Valley, with a brief funeral service beginning at Noon. Burial will follow at Miller Cemetery in Spring Valley.
John was born on December 19th, 1947, in Spring Valley, IL, to Carl and Ruth Van Schaick. He graduated from Hall High School in 1965 and married his high school sweetheart, Jeanne Vescogni, in 1967. John was a father to three daughters, and he loved being a "girl" dad. He spent many hours practicing softball, umpiring baseball games, and was often seen being kicked out of his daughters' softball games.
John found peace and purpose in nature. Whether hiking a trail at Starved Rock, photographing wildlife, or simply sitting on his porch drinking a cup of coffee, John was most at home under the open sky. His passions included researching his ancestry, photography, and raising monarch butterflies. One summer, he released more than 50 monarchs. ,
His love for the outdoors was matched only by his devotion to his family-especially his 7 grandchildren, whom he adored beyond measure. He never missed a school play, sporting event, or birthday! He showed up for every moment, camera in hand and pride in his heart. His greatest joy was watching his grandkids grow, laugh, and chase their own adventures. More recently, even when he was struggling, he loved watching his great-grandkids play.
John is survived by his wife, Jeanne, daughters Madonna (Ben) Lopez, Michelle (Miguel) Villarreal and Susie (Brad) Bartoli, grandkids, Michael Orlandi, Matt (Alexis) Orlandi, Cassie Villarreal, Miguel (Charlene) Villarreal, Zachary Lopez, Aly Lopez, and Sofia Gonzalez, great grandkids, Kaiden, Everleigh and Eliza, brother CJ (Bobbi) Van Schaick, sister-in-law Rita (Glenn) Peterson, nephew and godson Dr. Bob (Deb) Morrow, nephew, Dr. Mike (Mary) Morrow, niece, Chris (John) Slingsby, and nephews Eric, Jason and Corey Van Schaick.

I was saddened to hear of John’s passing. He was a great guy. We met as kids playing baseball in the Spring Valley Little League and then our paths crossed at Spring Valley Super Market where he was later employed. My sincerest condolences go out to his family.

I presume not many remember Vandy's in Ladd but that was where I first met John and Jeanne. Through the years at SVSM I always cherished our conversations and friendship.
