Susan Armbruster Obituary

Armbruster, Susan

Susan Louise Armbruster (née Peterson), a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, educator, and friend, passed away peacefully on April 1, leaving behind a legacy of love, wisdom, and dedication to learning. Born July 15, 1948, to Lou and Marilyn Peterson, Susan grew up with a deep appreciation for education and hard work. A proud Chicagoan, she attended The Immaculata High School then DePaul University, where she nurtured her passion for learning-a passion that would guide her throughout her life. As a young woman in the 1960s, she worked as a copy editor at the Chicago Tribune, but her true calling was in education. She began her teaching career at Immaculate Conception in Highland Park and later earned her doctorate, dedicating much of her career to the schools of Lake Bluff, where she served as Assistant Superintendent, Principal and Directorof Curriculum and made a lasting impact on students, teachers, and the community. Beyond her professional accomplishments, Susan's greatest joy was her family. She was a devoted mother to her four children-Ben (Virginia), John (Kayla), Chris (Faye Koo), and Sally (Bob McCann)-and a cherished grandmother to Franklin Armbruster, Fiona, Blair, Elizabeth, and Quinn McCann. She was also a loving sister to her brother, Bob Peterson and his wife Patti and loving aunt to Matthew, Allison and Andrew. Susan shared many years of her life with her former husband, Tod Armbruster, with whom she built a family and many cherished memories. She also remained close to Tod's brother, George, and his wife, Sue, as well as George's daughters, Christine and Kate. Tod's sister, Sarah, and her husband, Bob Fell, along with their children, Jessica and Sam, were also important parts of Susan's extended family. Susan had a vibrant social life, with many close friends who deeply loved her. Her busy social calendar was a testament to her love of companionship, lively conversations, and shared experiences. Whether gathering for a meal, attending events, or simply enjoying good company, she brought warmth and joy to every occasion and was always up for an adventure. She had a deep love of sports, especially college basketball and the Chicago Cubs, cheering on her teams with passion. Music was also a great source of joy in her life, bringing comfort and inspiration in every season. Her generosity, wisdom, and infectious spirit will be profoundly missed but never forgotten by those who had the privilege of knowing her. A raucous celebration of Susan's life will be held on Saturday, July 19 in Chicago (please refer back to https://www.wenbanfh.com/ for details). To ensure Susan's legacy as an ardent advocate for teachers lives on, her children have established the Susan Armbruster Memorial Fund for Teachers that will support continuing education and classroom enrichment opportunities. In lieu of flowers, donations toward the fund can be sent in Susan's name to: Alliance for Excellence, PO Box 479, Lake Bluff, IL 60044; www.lb65alliance.org; or to the Chicago Botanic Garden, which Susan also held dear to her heart.
