Margaret Hill Obituary
Margaret Ruth Hill, the daughter of the late Willie and Jessie Goins Sr. was born October 28, 1933, in Blythewood, South Carolina, and peacefully transitioned Saturday, May 3, 2025, at Lexington Hospital while surrounded by loved ones.
Margaret began her education at Bethel School in Blythewood, SC and later, as a teenager, moved to Baltimore, Maryland, where she graduated from Carver High School and attended Coppin State College for several years. Margaret loved God and diligently studied His Word, which inspired her to attend Baltimore School of the Bible to enhance her spiritual walk with the Lord and she proudly graduated in the spring of 1987.
She met the love of her life, Christopher Avon Hill, Sr., and on June 24, 1956, they were happily married at the Concord Baptist Church, Baltimore, Maryland. From this union were born four children: Christopher Avon Jr., Curtis Anthony, Kevin Gerard, and Towaya Yevella, all of whom she adored and was immensely proud to be their mother. Margaret and Christopher loved each other dearly and had genuine fun with each other just by being together. They loved to take family trips to the beach, museums, zoos, and amusement parks, and on long road trips to visit family in the South. This blissful union lasted 19 years until Rev. Dr. Christopher A. Hill Sr. was called home to be with the Lord.
Margaret accepted Christ as her personal Savior at an early age and was baptized at the St. Mark Baptist Church in Ridgeway, SC. She was an avid follower of Jesus Christ and deeply passionate about the Word of God to the point that "she hid the Word in her heart so that she might not sin against Him."
In 1960, Rev. Hill became pastor of the Temple Baptist Church, and Margaret became the first lady. She was loved by all because of her willingness to listen, help, and encourage others. She taught Sunday School and later became the Assistant Superintendent. She sang with the Hill's Specials Vocal Chorus and the Senior Choir. She served on the Missionary and Pastor's Aid Boards. Margaret was a fervent supporter of her husband, family, and the church.
Being from a large family, she was a loving mother, sister, aunt, cousin, and a fearless protector of her grandchildren. Nothing was more important than family. Margaret considered all her family as a gift from God. She was known throughout the family for her wisdom and wit, and if you couldn't handle the truth, you knew not to ask Margaret. She was the number one cheerleader in all of her children's endeavors. Margaret had a unique way of making everyone feel special and loved.
Margaret was a stay-at-home mom for many years. Later in life, she had vast experience in the workforce. Because of her love for children, she became a substitute teacher for elementary and junior high students in the Baltimore City Public School System. Margaret was a fabulous and "out-of-this-world" cook and enjoyed catering parties for Christmas and Hanukkah, which became a yearly tradition.
Full of energy and bored with retirement, Margaret worked in the jewelry department at Walmart for 13 years. She was very sociable and loved meeting and helping people who were buying jewelry as gifts for birthdays, holidays, graduations, and marriages. Many wives sent their husbands to Ms. Margaret in the Jewelry Department for that perfect gift because the wives knew that Ms. Margaret had an exquisite taste for jewelry. But out of all the jobs she held, her most cherished job was being a nanny for Alexandra, the daughter of Dr. and Dr. Jabs, and rearing their daughter from infancy through her teen years.
After returning home to Blythewood in 1997, she joined Little Zion Baptist Church and immediately became a very active member. She was a member of the Sunday School Ministry, Noonday Bible Study Class, Seniors Ministry, and the Missionary Ministry. Additionally, she participated in the Intercessory Prayer Ministry, Drama Ministry productions, Vacation Bible School activities, Community Day activities, and Women's Ministry. Margaret was a member of Women of Wisdom, a community organization of women of God coming together in fellowship and celebration of life and one another. She had a great love for Pastor Davis and the Little Zion Church Family. She formed special friendships with many members and was often seen hugging and kissing as many as she could before and after services.
Margaret was preceded in death by her parents the late Jessie and Willie Goins, and her siblings: Sarah Brown, Sally Moore, Willie Jr., Pete, Frank, and Eddie Goins.
She leaves to cherish her fond memories her three children, Christopher A. Hill Jr (Dawn) Albany, New York, Kevin G. Hill Baltimore, Maryland, Towaya H. Dean (Vernon) Randallstown, Maryland; three brothers, Larry Goins, Richard Goins (Henrietta), Matthew Goins; Baltimore, Maryland: four sisters, Catherine Jacobs, Betty Cannon (Rufus), Estelle Davis (Gary), and Jaquetta Gordon; five grandchildren, Tia Myrick (Leroy), Kia Bias, Gerard Brown, Cedric Brown, and Christopher A. Hill III; thirteen great-grandchildren; a special Aunt, Catherine "Fat" Goins, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
