Kenneth Coats Obituary

KENNETH EUGENE COATS
April 19, 1948 ˜ May 2, 2025

Kenneth Eugene “Rooster” Coats, Sr., 77, passed away on May 2, 2025, in Vancouver, WA, the city where he was born on April 19, 1948. His life was one of service, family, friendship, and unwavering dedication to those around him.

Ken proudly served his country in the U.S. Air Force on Active duty 1968-72. In 1973, he joined the Oregon Air National Guard, where he continued to serve until his retirement in 2004 as a E-7 Master Sergeant.

Beyond his military career, Ken was known for his generous spirit and tireless work ethic. Whether it was hunting or fishing, working with his tractor, or lending a hand to anyone in need, Ken was always the first to arrive and the last to leaveready with a helping hand and a warm smile. He especially enjoyed time spent working on Cap’n Andys flight crew, his Tuesday Coffee with his Bethel Gents as well as with his fellow retired ORANG friends.

Ken was a fighter, always “hit the ground running” as he battled Pancreatic Cancer since 2017 and then Lung Cancer in 2024. Every new Challenge met with his motto of “Adapt and Overcome”.

He deeply loved his family and friends. Ken is survived by his wife Denneva; children Casey Coats (Stephanie) and Angie McDougall (Jay); sister Chris Anderson (Denny); as well as step children, many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends who all held special places in his heart.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Gene and Dee Coats.

A Memorial Service will be held on June 28, 2025, at 2 P.M. at Battle Ground Baptist Church 1110 NW 6th Ave Battle Ground, WA

Ken served our country proudly in war and in peace. He kindly shared some remembrances of his Vietnam War service which are included in the the 142nd Fighter Wing story posted on the wing's webpage, "Remembering the OreANG's Vietnam Veterans," which you can read at: https://www.142wg.ang.af.mil/News/Features/Display/Article/864347/remembering-the-oreangs-vietnam-veterans/

Rooster, you were friendly to your fellow man and to history, making it from Southeast Asia to Southwest Asia and points in between. We're gonna miss you, friend! GBU and your family - Hand salute!

Many thoughts and memories have passed my way as I come to grips with our loss, Ken. From school bus rides to visits and reunion activities, I was blessed by your presence. A tangible remembrance is this collection of boxes from my woodshop. Much of the wood odds and ends you gave me are captured in these pieces. RIP, sir.
