Sherry Lynn Hagen

Sherry Lynn Hagen, 76, passed away June 22, 2025, in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. She and her husband of 57 years, Arden Hagen, were starting a birdwatching and Snow Leopard tour when she survived a heart attack but died of complications from a perforated stomach ulcer.
Sherry was born in Spokane, WA on Jan. 13, 1949, to Frank and Ethel Butts of Otis Orchards. She graduated from East Valley high school in 1967 and married Arden on September 1 of that year. This year they celebrated their 60th anniversary of their first date on April 3.
Sherry enjoyed several crafts including miniature doll houses and golf, but her biggest passion was photographing birds around the world. She and her husband made 35 birdwatching trips to 28 countries. At the time of her death, she was ranked fifth on the American Birding Association list for photographed birds in the world with 3,941 pictures. Her life list for identified species was 5,102. Hummingbirds and Owls were her favorite birds.
She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Donald Butts, sisters Sandra Morgan and Billie Kay Johnson.
She is survived by her husband, Arden Hagen of Vancouver, sons Jason and Russell Hagen, granddaughters McKenzie Jo Hagen and Prisma Joy Hagen, all living in the Spokane area.
Charitable contributions can be made to Vancouver Audubon, PO Box 1966, Vancouver, WA, 98668-1966.

Last time I saw her was at Ocean Shores. We were both out watching Snowy Owls. Unexpectedly saw her.

Sherry was just a wonderful friend that we lovingly called "Grandma Purple" She was so kind to my kids and grandkids. I will never go birding again without remembering her spunky personality and knowledgeable bird information. Our hearts are just broken for Arden, their sons, and grand daughters. I'll miss you forever, Sherry.

Sherry was a dear friend. I will miss her. She was an extraordinary woman with many talents and of course an excellent and courageous birder. Arden was a wonderful supporter for all their travels and a loving husband who was always by Sherry's side.
