Marilyn E. Barton
January 8, 1932 - January 13, 2025
Marilyn E. Barton, 93, was called home to be with her Lord and Savior on Monday, January 13, 2025, while being cared for at Brookestone Acres in Columbus.
The funeral service will be held on Friday, January 17 at 1:30 PM, at Peace Lutheran Church in Columbus with Rev. Cory Burma officiating. Interment will be Roselawn Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be on Thursday from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Gass Haney Funeral Home and continue from 12:30 PM until service time on Friday at the church. Memorials may be directed to the church.
Marilyn was born January 8, 1932, to Bernard and Mildred (Menebroker) Schacht on the family farm in Antelope County, near Orchard, Nebraska. She was baptized on February 22, 1932, at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Orchard. She confirmed her Christian faith through confirmation in 1943. Marilyn was the oldest of three children, having two brothers Elden and Wayne.
Marilyn's years of education started in a country school in Knox County, Nebraska. She graduated from Orchard High School in 1949. Marilyn had a desire to teach so she enrolled in Wayne State College. Marilyn earned a degree in education in July 1955, while also teaching in a rural school and three years in the Orchard Public schools.
On August 17, 1955, Marilyn was united in marriage to Douglas Barton at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Orchard. They celebrated 65 years together making their home in Columbus. Marilyn and Doug were blessed with two children, Kevin and Jan. She taught full-time for several years in Columbus and then went to part time as a substitute teacher.
Marilyn and Doug were charter members of Peace Lutheran Church. She volunteered at the church for many years as well as at the Columbus Community Hospital. She and Doug delivered Meals-on-Wheels to several residents in Columbus over the years. Marilyn loved spending time with her family and friends, and attending their children's and grandchildren's games and events. She also enjoyed playing bridge, golfing, Husker games, and the many travels with Doug and friends.
Marilyn is survived by: Son – Kevin (Cindy) Barton of Columbus, NE, Daughter – Jan (Bill) Hizer of Sedalia, CO, Grandchildren – Crystal (John) Weber, Stacey (Dustin) Fife, Amy (Thad) Borchers, Gary (Eliza) Hizer, Kelsey (Isaiah) Bockelman, and Derek (Emily) Hizer, 11 Great Grandchildren, Brother – Wayne (Julia) Schacht, Sister-in-law – Carol Lautenschlager, Brother-in-law – Rick Keil, Seven nieces, and Five nephews.
Marilyn was preceded in death by: Parents – Bernard and Mildred Schacht, Husband – Doug Barton, Brother – Elden (Marian) Schacht, Parents-in-law – Homer and Clara Barton, Brother-in-law – Noel Lautenschlager, and Sister-in-law – Linda Keil.
