Melissa Tye Brucker, an indomitable spirit with a heart as vibrant as her laugh, passed away on January 11, 2025, at 75. Born on July 26, 1949, in Mississippi, Melissa grew up surrounded by the etiquette and charm of cotillion culture but was always a rebel at heart. She was drawn to the soulful rhythms of rock and roll, blues, and soul and willing to defy the constraints of societal expectations. That determination led Melissa to break into a competitive male-dominated field successfully. She became the first female medical photographer in Memphis, working at John Gaston and Baptist hospitals. She also won multiple awards for her art photography, showcasing her creative talents. Later in life, she also began a career as a commercial videographer.
In Memphis, Melissa also met the love of her life and husband of 47 years, Carl Brucker. They had two children together, Allison and Matthew, and built a home filled with love, books, photography, and vinyl records. Melissa fiercely supported K-12 education programs and never hesitated to lead the charge. Her outstanding contributions were recognized by Arkansas for Gifted and Talented Education (AGATE).
Melissa's adventurous spirit led her to explore the USA and the world, immersing herself in cultures and experiences that enriched her life. Her small stature belied a larger-than-life personality. She was a lover of spontaneous trips, a jokester, a rebel, and a seeker of new experiences. Melissa will be deeply missed, but her spirit lives on in the lives of those she touched and the music and travels that filled her heart.
Melissa is preceded in death by her mother, Alice Tye Noel Hathorn, her father, Thomas Quitman Hathorn, and her brother, Thomas Hathorn. She is survived by her husband, Carl Brucker, her daughter, Allison Brucker, her son, Matthew Toles, and her son-in-law Sam Toles.
A visitation celebrating Melissa's life will be held at the Cornwall Funeral Home in Dardanelle on February 1 from 3 to 5 p.m. to remember a woman who always danced to her own beat.

Melissa was my first cousin (I am Dick's sister, originally from Bassfield, MS), and she was about 11 years older than me. I have sweet memories of us all being at Grandmama's and Granddaddy's in Jackson. I always looked forward to seeing her and always thought she was so pretty! I have not seen her in many years, but we reconnected a few years ago on facebook and had quite a few chats on Messenger, sharing and getting to know each other again. Her friendship was special to me. I am so sorry about her passing and for your loss. Prayers for all of you. Barbara Thompson Dauphin

It's been a long long time since I've seen Melissa. Little Tommy was 1 year older than me and I think Melissa was 4 - 5 years younger than I. We all shared so many good times and memories when we moved to Bassfiled in 1952.
Chris my son and I still have the farm. Breezy Hill LLC. The old barn is still there. The house with red shingles. Time got away from us all.
So sorry to hear about Melissa's passing. I see she was a beautiful women. So was her mother Aunt Tupie.
Dying is part of life and living. I lost my wife of 28 years 2 years ago to a brain tumor.
Hopefully we will all meet again in heaven.
Regards,
Your First Cousin
