Robert Nielsen Obituary

Robert "Bob" Nielsen Nielsen

It is with deep sadness that we share the passing of Robert "Bob" Nielsen. He passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 26, 2025, surrounded by his loving family.

Bob lived a fantastic life and touched so many hearts with his warmth, creativity, and entrepreneurial spirit. His love of both art and business allowed him to make meaningful connections with people from all walks of life.

Bob was born in Chicago on April 7, 1933, to parents, Marvin Burger and Maxine May (nee Coleman) Nielsen.

Though he was born in Chicago, Bob spent much of his childhood in the small town of Lena, Illinois. He was always full of curiosity and ingenuity. One favorite story is of him as a young boy building a boat from materials taken from his parents' store (without permission!), constructing it and coating it with tar. He returned home later that day covered in tar from head to toe, having to explain what he did -- a testament to the inventive nature that would stay with him throughout his life.

Bob met Kathryn "Kay" Novak while attending a dance at the local VFW in Freeport. The couple were married over Labor Day weekend in 1955 and would have celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary this year.

Bob was many things: a loving husband and father, a devoted friend, a mentor and coach, a talented painter and artist, a fisherman, pilot, skier, and boater, a teacher, an Indian Guide leader, a salesman, an entrepreneur, and a business owner and leader.

He was the best father anyone could have ever had. He was a cheerleader and a mentor; he taught his children and showed them the world.

We will miss Bob’s generous heart, mischievous humor, and boundless love. Thank you to everyone whose lives he touched, and to those offering their love and support during the celebration of Bob's life.

Bob is survived by his beloved wife of nearly 70 years, Kathryn Nielsen; his children, David (Stacy Carlsen-Nielsen) Nielsen, Blake (Greta) Nielsen, and Christine (Mike) Majury; and his grandchildren, Garrett Nielsen, Benjamin Carlsen, Gabrielle Nielsen, Cole Nielsen, Karina Nielsen, Tatum Majury, and Braeden Majury.

He was preceded in death by his sisters, Jackie and Janice.

Visitation will be Wednesday, July 30. 2025, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. all at Davenport Family Funeral Home, 149 West Main Street, Barrington, IL 60010, with a reception to follow. Burial will be private for the immediate family.
