Deborah Lynn Matrious "Waabanangookwe" April 4, 1972 - October 9, 2025
Deborah "Debbie" Matrious passed away on October 9, 2025, at the age of 53. She was born on April 4, 1972, in Grantsburg, Wisconsin, to Nancy Matrious and Morris Bearhart Sr. Debbie was raised on the Danbury Reservation, where her roots and spirit remained deeply connected throughout her life.
Debbie was known for her tough personality and fierce independence. She wasn't afraid to speak her mind and always stood up for what she believed in. She lived life on her own terms, unapologetically and with heart.
She had a sharp sense of humor, a deep love for her family and community, and a special fondness for Pepsi, a small joy she never passed up. Debbie made a lasting impression on everyone she met with her boldness, honesty, and unwavering authenticity.
She is preceded in death by her daughter, Katrina Matrious; her brother, Matthew Matrious; her mother, Nancy Matrious; and her father, Morris Bearhart Sr.
She is survived by her daughter, Anna Matrious; her brothers, Joseph Matrious, Morris Bearhart Jr. and William Bearhart Sr.; her sisters, Claudette Matrious, Misty Matrious, Rita (Ron) Garbow and Jessica Benjamin-Garbow; and many nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends who will remember her strength, laughter, and enduring spirit.
Debbie's Ojibwe name, Waabanangookwe, means "Morning Star", a name that reflects the resilience she carried through life.
Friends may call on Sunday, October 12, 2025, at dusk at Danbury Tribal Hall in Danbury. Funeral services will be held on Monday, October 13, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. at Danbury Tribal Hall, with Spiritual Leader Brad "Zazhike" Harrington officiating. Interment will follow at Danbury Cemetery.
