Joyce Kipps Obituary
December 15, 1927 - June 20, 2025
Joyce Rebecca Kipps, 97, of Aroda, VA., passed away Friday, June 20, 2025, after a short hospitalization. She was born Dec. 15, 1927, to L.W. and Stella Hammond Kipps.
Joyce was predeceased by her parents and brothers, Ward and Paul Kipps; and sisters-in-law, Beth and Betty. She is survived by her niece and nephews, John, Barbara, David (Mary Ruth), Kennedy (Caroline) and William (Trisha) Kipps; and great nieces and nephews, Jonathan, Stella, Walter (Bethany), Rebekah, Nathaniel, Catherine, Tobias, Hazel, Linda and Paul Kipps. She was the constant presence in a parade of generations-caring for those ahead of her and guiding those who followed.
She received her bachelor's degree in education from Roanoke College and her master's in special education from U.Va. She taught at Criglersville Elementary and at Madison County's middle and high schools during her 40-year career.
As a Roanoke alumna, Joyce was a class agent, helped students start a Lutheran women's group on campus, and endowed two scholarships. In 2010, she received the Roanoke College Medal, her school's highest alumni honor.
Joyce was a life-long member of Mt. Nebo Lutheran Church in Rochelle. She taught Sunday school, sang in the choir, and held many leadership roles, including in the state-wide Lutheran Women's Organization. Joyce also was active in the Madison Woman's Club, the Daughters of the American Revolution, and the Retired Teachers Association.
Joyce's funeral service and burial will be 10 a.m. Friday, June 27, at Mt. Nebo Lutheran Church, 3980 Jacks Shop Rd., Rochelle, VA. The family invites memorial gifts in Joyce's honor be made to the Joyce Kipps '50 Endowed Student Scholarship, Roanoke College, 221 College Lane, Salem, VA 24153.

Ms. Kipps was an amazing teacher ! She knew how to get across the information in a way that was easy to understand not just teach ! Firm but caring ! She still kept in touch long after I´d graduated ! Prayers for all the family.
