Kevin Newman Obituary

Kevin Paul Newman, 78, a longtime resident of Darien, CT, passed away peacefully on January 29, 2025. Kevin is survived by his wife, Jani Newman, son, Brian Newman and daughters, Jesse Newman and Beth Downes; as well as his daughter-in-law, Cait Newman, son-in-law Robert Downes, and four grandchildren, Bradley Newman (8), Nate Newman (4), Hank Downes (3), and Whitney Newman (1).
Kevin was born in Holyoke, MA, where he and his siblings Robert and Carol Newman were raised by their mother, Dorothy Newman, and four loving aunts. He earned a BA from Providence College and MBA from the UConn School of Business and served in the Vietnam War, as a LTJG in the United States Navy. He met Jani in San Diego where he was stationed, and they were married in 1971. Kevin and Jani moved to Newport, VA and later to Connecticut, when Kevin began a career in finance that spanned 45 years.
Kevin was an active member of the Darien community, holding positions on the Board of Education, Board of Finance, and Board of Selectmen. He co-founded Pride First, a community-based program supporting at risk student athletes in the New York Metro area through mentoring and academic services. He was recognized by the Providence College Club of New York in 1998 for Outstanding Personal Achievement and, in 2008, was inducted into the UConn School of Business Hall of Fame.
Kevin was a devoted family man and friend to many who will dearly miss his funny sayings, words of encouragement, and bright smile. He was a voracious reader and hobbyist, whose many interests included the Civil War, Dr. Martin Luther King, Sir Winston Churchill, astronomy, hunting, auto racing, triathlons, and a lifelong love of the Boston Red Sox.

My deepest condolences to Jani, Brian, Jesse, and Beth.
Just a few words about how much Kevin meant to me. Kevin was an esteemed colleague, trusted business partner, mentor, and a very dear friend. Around my house, I would often refer to him as my professional father. I just feel so fortunate and blessed that we crossed paths over 30 years ago. I will miss his curated list of best practices, life lessons, and constant pursuit to do the right thing. I will also never forget Kevin's wonderful use of sayings and metaphors. To this day, I think of Kevin often. Whenever one of his sayings enters my mind, I smile. He also continually offered words of encouragement and kindness - all with a great sense of humor. Over the years, Kevin and I had many great conversations. He would share stories about his wonderful family. I loved seeing his easy smile and twinkle in his eye as he spoke so fondly about Jani, Brian, Jesse, and Beth. He was so proud. A truly devoted family man. May God bless Kevin, and may he rest in peace.

I'm so very sorry for the loss of such a wonderful person. I was Kevin's executive assistant at First Boston. I worked with Kevin for over 10 years. We kept in close touch over the years. I worked with Kevin on many different deals while I was at Aetna and he was at First Boston. Still have great memories of the Big East Basketball dinners First Boston gave. He was truly one of the good guys.
