Peter Ruhlin Obituary

Peter Eric Ruhlin
Peter Eric Ruhlin passed away surrounded by family on July 27, 2025, on Hilton Head Island, SC. Peter was diagnosed with cancer in 2024, but he continued to live life to the fullest with his characteristic enthusiasm, tenacity, and positivity until the very end.
Peter was born on May 10, 1961, in Kodiak, AK. He grew up in New Canaan, CT where he played on the lacrosse and football teams and achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. Peter earned his Mechanical Engineering degree with Honors from Brown University, where he played on the lacrosse team. After graduating from Boston College Law School, Cum Laude, Peter joined Milbank, Tweed, Hadley & McCloy in New York City, where he met Holly Troxell, a fellow corporate finance attorney. They married in 1988 and settled in Darien, CT. In 1995, Peter became a partner at Linklaters & Paines and moved to Hong Kong to establish the Global U.S. Practice. Peter and his family returned to Darien in 1999 where they lived until they moved to Hilton Head Island in 2013. Most recently, Peter was Chief Legal Officer and Head of Strategic Initiatives at Steward Partners, a New York City-based wealth management firm. He was a longtime member of The Misquamicut Club in Watch Hill, RI, The Stanwich Club in Greenwich, CT, and The Camp Fire Club in Chappaqua, NY. Peter was also an involved member of his community, including as Chairman of the Board and Director of Laurel House, a nonprofit organization that provides resources for people living with mental illness, and as a devoted Member of the Board of Trustees of the Watch Hill Chapel Society.
Peter was an avid skier and outdoorsman. Some of his many passions and talents included golfing, biking, windsurfing, boating, house projects, and sharing stories. He filled each day with purpose and a determination to leave everything-and everyone-better than before. Above all else, Peter's greatest joy was spending time with Holly, his children, his granddaughter, and his dog, Chief. Peter's family will remember him for being larger than life. Peter was a total original. Once you met him, you never forgot him. We never will, and we will love him always.
He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Holly; their children, Welles Ruhlin, Whitney Ruhlin (Mark) Muldowney, Lydia Ruhlin (Ryan) Brady, Charlotte Ruhlin, and their granddaughter, Maeve Muldowney. Peter was predeceased by his parents, Robert Raymond "Pete" Ruhlin and Marie Froehlich Ruhlin.

Dear Holly and Family. I am so sorry for your loss. I well remember Peter joining Linklaters as an important addition in the early stages of developing our US Securities practice. When I became managing partner of the firm in 1998 he was always friendly, positive and constructive in our discussions on how best to develop the practice, and did a great job not only of fitting into our fast internationalising firm but helping us to understand
US legal practices. Friendly
and warm I have only good
memories of him. May the many happy memories you have of Peter comfort you now and into the future.

I worked a lot with Peter in the late 90s , the birth of Linklaters US practice in Asia. He was a pleasure to work with and to enjoy a quiet drink after work.. in Singapore he would retire from the bar having many calls to make to the US. I recall one meeting with a US associate candidate at the Shangrila poolside bar. The plan was to hire him in Asia, but he told us... no he wanted to go to
London... Peter did not miss a beat but carried on selling our London offering
As the photo shows, he always had bigger fish to fry! RIP Tony

A great guy, an enthusiastic optimist, whom I knew from his time in Hong Kong when I was in Linklaters Bangkok - we will remember him.

Holly and Family: When I joined Linklaters as a summer associate in 2006, Peter was my partner mentor and immediately made me feel welcomed -- in particular, I have a fantastic memory of him organizing for us a helicopter ride around New York Harbor / over Yankee stadium; to this day the only time I've ever been in a helicopter! His warmth as a person was immediate, and I know his memory will be a source of strength for his family and loved ones.

Dear Holly. I am so saddened to hear the news of Peter´s passing. Peter was central to the early success of the US practice at the firm, and I am grateful for his support when I was a young associate and, in particular, for his wit and positive outlook. Dear Holly. I am deeply saddened to hear of Peter's illness and passing. We were colleagues right through his years at Linklaters and he made an important contribution to the Brazil and Latam practices after his return from Hong Kong. I remember well that smile, enthusiasm and genuine warmth that are evident in the picture you have shared in his memory. I hope that you and the rest of the family, of whom Peter always spoke so proudly, will be comforted in your loss by so many wonderful memories of your lives together. You are in my prayers. David

Holly
So sorry to hear such sad news. I only have fond memories of Peter and his time at Linklaters. Having been there with him in New York from his first day in the firm (and even before he joined) he was always great fun to be with. He was one of the founding partners of the US practice and a whole generation of lawyers at Linklaters owe him a huge debt of gratitude for what he helped to create.
Thoughts and prayers are with you and the family.

We are so saddened to hear about the loss of Peter and our hearts go out to Holly and the family. Peter was truly a one of a kind person, gracing all who had a chance to know him with his engaging energy and infectious positive outlook.

I first met Peter when we were in our late 20s-then starting our respective "big law firm" careers at Milbank Tweed in New York in the late `80s. It was also the time when Peter first met his lovely bride to be Holly and I was also dating my bride to be Shelly. At our wedding, Peter read that infamous passage from Corinthians 13:4 . Shelly and I also fondly remember, a few years later meeting up with Pete and Holly when we were expats overseas-Pete and Holly in Hong Kong and us in Moscow.

Peter left an indelable mark on us and we will always cherish the fond memories from that time in our lives.
May he rest in peace.

Oh this news breaks my heart. The Ruhlin family were the dearest of friends at 3 Nolen to the Luther family at 1 Nolen lane most particularly to my father, Kerry. They welcomed him into their family and enriched his life beautifully until his passing in 2011. Who can ever forget the poolside get together at the Ruhlins with the new owners of 1 Nolen lane a few months after we sold dad's house. There were about 10 of us and it was one hell of a great evening. I will treasure my memories of Peter. My love and deepest sympathy to his family.
