James Cosper Obituary

James William Cosper, Jr.

August 24, 1955 - February 8, 2025

Canyon, Texas - "Happiness is awakening to the touch of a loved one, in the awareness of God, and with a purpose for our day."

- Kay and Jim Cosper, 1979.

James William Cosper, Jr., a native of Fort Worth, Texas, and resident of Canyon, Texas, passed away Saturday, February 8, 2025, after being ill for four years. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, February 28th, in the chapel at First United Methodist Church in Fort Worth, Texas followed immediately by a reception at the church. A private inurnment in the church's columbarium will be held.

Jim was born August 24, 1955. He attended school in River Oaks, Texas, and was a 1973 graduate of Castleberry High School where he was in Key Club and choir. He attended The University of Texas in Austin, transferred his sophomore year to Baylor University and graduated with his Bachelor of Business Administration degree in 1977. He was an Accountant.

He and Virginia Kay Anderson were married December 29, 1979, in Waco, Texas. While preparing for marriage, their preacher asked them to describe what elements would contribute to a happy marriage. In typical "Kay and Jim" fashion, they took the task to heart and spent several hours trying to hone their vision for a happy marriage. They crafted the "couple's quote" cited above and it served them well. Jim led a faith-based, well-ordered and simple life. He loved people and not things.

Throughout his life, Jim was passionate about Southwest Conference football, The University of Texas, Baylor University, "good 'ole Methodist hymns," and ALL THINGS TEXAS!

After he retired, Jim attended Tarleton State University and graduated with a Master in Public Accountancy at age 61, he began taking piano lessons, took up fly-fishing and joined the church choir. He and Kay moved to Canyon, Texas, and built their retirement home on the rim of Palo Duro Canyon. Prior to his illness, Jim and Kay were both active members of Polk Street Methodist Church in Amarillo, Texas.

Jim is survived by his loving wife, Kay, of 45 years; two sisters- and brothers-in-law, Martha Cranor and her husband, Dr. John David Cranor II, of Fort Collins, Colorado, Marian Daniel and her husband, Frank Daniel, Jr. of Arlington, Texas; nephews and nieces, John David Cranor III of Brooklyn, New York, Matthew Cranor and his wife, Sarah Cranor of Windsor, Colorado, and Jennifer Daniel and Sarah Daniel, of Arlington, Texas; and a great nephew and great niece, Jack Cranor and Ivy Wren Cranor of Windsor, Colorado.

Kay would like to thank her family, friends and neighbors for their prayers, concern and support over the past 4 years. She will be forever grateful to her immediate neighbors, the Wheelers, the Hights, and the Coons for their innumerable acts of daily kindness. Jim was blessed to have very caring physicians Dr. Gulley in Amarillo, Texas and Dr. Amir with the Nazih Zuhdi Liver Transplant Institute in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. And lastly, the team members of BSA Hospice of the Southwest Team #1 were knowledgeable and compassionate and provided comfort and care to both Kay and Jim throughout the final weeks of his life.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Polk Street Methodist Church, 1401 S. Polk Street, Amarillo, Texas 79101 or a charity of choice.
