Billie Merkerson Obituary

Billie Jean Merkerson, 87, passed away peacefully in Pensacola, FL, on Tuesday, December 3, 2024. She was born in Saltillo on November 4, 1937, to Bill L. Towery and Violet "Mattie" Towery.

Billie Jean met her first husband, Lewis Merkerson; a sailor, at church. They had two sons together. After his death she returned to Old Dominion College to continue her education.

As time went on, she met and married John Uhr; a Naval officer of Norfolk, VA. Their family grew and she received a stepdaughter. The family retired to Pensacola, FL, in 1972. Billie completed her teaching degree in 1982. She taught for a total of 30 years at secondary and post-secondary levels.

After retirement she returned to her home in Thaxton, MS attended Philadelphia Baptist Church in Etta, MS. After her two sons' deaths, she returned to Pensacola to be near her granddaughter.

She is survived by her stepdaughter, Vanna McHale and her children, Alex and Max; granddaughters, Lydia and Eleanor Merkerson of Kansas City, MO, and Erin Ashley Merkerson of Pensacola; several cousins and friends in the Tupelo area.

Billie dearly loved her family and friends, whom she considered her extended family. She was especially close to her church family in Mississippi and the members of the Grace Sunday School Class at Olive Baptist Church.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Bill L. and Violet (Mattie) Towery; sons, Cary L. Merkerson and Craig E. Merkerson; husbands, Lewis Merkerson and John Uhr.

She will be missed greatly but will live forever in the hearts of her family and friends. Graveside services will be at 10:00 am Friday, February 7, 2025, at Lee Memorial Park.
