Bobby Carter Obituary

Bobby Bowery Carter, 90, passed away from this life on Wednesday, May 7, 2025 at his home on Phillip's Schoolhouse Road. Bobby was born in Amory on September 21, 1934 to Bowery Augustin and Allie Mae Fowlkes Carter. He graduated from Hatley High School, Itawamba Junior College, and later earned a bachelor's and master's degree from Mississippi State University in elementary education. On April 21, 1957, he married the former Gail Newton. He retired from a career that spanned 27 years in public education having taught at Sulligent, Detroit, and Millport, Alabama instructing math and language arts. Following retirement, he volunteered with the reading program at Hatley School and, during the course of his time, Bobby had a great impact on the future, inspiring the students he taught. Not only did his inspiration reach his students, but he also had an impact on educators as well. A consummate family man, he raised his two daughters and was blessed with two sons-in-law both of whom are greatly loved by Bobby and Gail. He supported his grandchildren to the fullest and was proud to have seen his 4 great grandchildren.

To hear the name, Bobby Carter, the mind goes directly to bluegrass music. Since a child, Bobby was always a lead fiddle player who was masterful at his craft. If a picking was to take place, Bobby was there playing and often traveled to Smithville, TN where he was a staple. His encouraging style allowed him to mentor many young musicians many of whom are still playing today. In addition to the fiddle, he could play many more instruments and made many dear friends along the way. Often, he played in the area nursing homes and brought joy to all the residents in the way that he loved people. He was a beekeeper for nearly 30 years and loved to raise a garden and had numerous fruit trees. Bobby was a charter member of Weaver Creek Hunting Club where he loved to deer hunt and fish. He could build anything from scratch, and he was a member of St. Union Primitive Baptist Church in Amory. Bobby Carter was one of a kind, but he will be remembered fondly as a faithful Christian who was a great family man and a devoted friend and neighbor.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 10, 2025 at Cleveland-Moffett Funeral Home with Bro. Chuck Moffett officiating. Burial will follow in the Hatley Cemetery.

In addition to his wife of 68 years, Gail Carter, he is survived by two daughters, Nina Huffman (Mike), Amory and Cindy Falvey (Tex), Madison, MS; brothers-in-law, Perry Newton and Melvin Kemp; grandchildren, Laura Beth Vaughan (Matt), Sonja Childers (Cody), Kyle Huffman, and Drew Falvey; great grandchildren, Bailey Grace Vaughan, Will Childers, Grayson Vaughan, and Hayes Childers; a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins; and his longtime friend, Bobby Cantrell.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his siblings, Leroy Carter, Ellis Carter, Pauline Moore, Sue Didinger, Era Mae Carter, and infant brother, Hassel Carter.

Pallbearers will be Mike Huffman, Tex Falvey, Kyle Huffman, Drew Falvey, Matt Vaughan, and Cody Childers. Honorary pallbearers will be Perry Newton, Melvin Kemp, and Jim Stallings.

Visitation will be on Saturday from noon until the service hour at the funeral home.
