Miriam Arlene Hawks, 94, of Wakarusa, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family on Friday, Aug. 1, 2025, at The Waters of Wakarusa. She was born Feb. 12, 1931, in Wakarusa, to Roscoe M. and Grace E. (Overholser) Stickel.
Surviving are two sons, Dan Hawks, White Pigeon, Michigan, and Terry (Diane) Hawks, Wakarusa; a daughter, Sandra (Stan) Lechlitner, Milford; three grandchildren, Amanda (Logan) Messer, Robert (Christa) Lechlitner and Richard (Bethany) Lechlitner; and four great-grandchildren, Charlotte and Annabeth Lechlitner, and Kayden and Katherine Lechlitner.
Preceding her in death are her parents, sisters Dorcas Stickel, Lucile Stickel, Pauline (Lawrence) Nusbaum and Ruby Stickel, and brothers Robert Earl Stickel and Arthur L. (Bertha) Stickel.
Miriam was a 1949 graduate of Wakarusa High School, where she was a salutatorian. She was a volunteer for Brethren Volunteer Service from 1949 to 1952. For 31 years, she worked in the office at Conn-Selmer, Elkhart, and retired in 1992. She was a lifelong member of Baugo Church of the Brethren, Wakarusa, and served as the treasurer for many years. Miriam loved to read, garden and enjoyed nature walks. She always loved to help on the farm, starting as a child.
Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 7, at Rieth Rohrer Ehret Lienhart Funeral Home, 117 W. Waterford St., Wakarusa, followed by a funeral service at 11 a.m. also at the funeral home. Pastor David Stackhouse of Baugo Church of the Brethren will officiate. Burial will follow at Olive (West) Cemetery. Memorial Contributions may be directed to Baugo Church of the Brethren, 64051 C.R. 1, Wakarusa, IN 46573.
