Belmont, NC – Betty Merle Tate Clark, 87, of 1020 Hartshaw Court, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, July 13, 2025 at her residence.
Born in Gaffney, she was the daughter of the late Henry Allen Tate and Olive Clary Tate. She was a graduate of Gaffney High School, Limestone College and Mercer University. Betty taught school in Danville, VA, Winston-Salem, NC, Charlotte, NC and the Dekalb County Schools in the public and private sectors for over 32 years. She served on the Limestone College Board of Trustees, loved her family, and was an avid Clemson Tiger fan.
Surviving are two nephews, Allen Tate III (Sha) of Charlotte, NC and Harry Christopher Cline of Gaffney; a niece, Libby Tate Gordon (Paisley) of Charlotte, NC; three great-nephews, Joshua Cline Transou (Celeste) of Greenville, Allen Tate IV and Paisley Gordon III, both of Charlotte, NC; three great-nieces, Leila Transou Shaw (Josh) of Belmont, NC, Carter Tate and Bowen Gordon, both of Charlotte, NC; a sister-in-law, Bessie Tate of Charlotte, NC. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Olive Tate Cline, a brother, Henry Allen Tate, Jr. and a niece, Clary Cline Transou.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM on Thursday, July 17, 2025 at First Baptist Church in Gaffney with Dr. Tommy Huddleston, Reverend Tommy Comer and Reverend Kevin Hampton officiating. An informal gathering of Betty's friends will be held after the service in the Church's Family Life Center. Interment in Oakland Cemetery will be private for the family.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to: First Baptist Church, 200 N. Limestone Street, Gaffney, SC 29340.
The family will be at their respective homes.
