Robert Edwards Obituary

Dr. Robert Lee Patrick Edwards
January 11, 1929 - June 13, 2025
R.L. Patrick Edwards was born January 11, 1929 in San Antonio, TX, and passed away at the age of 96 surrounded by his loving family. Pat was the child of Robert Lee Edwards and Leola Hickman Edwards. Although he lost his father at a young age, he went on to forge an extraordinary path, a testament to his grit, intellect, and character. He was a graduate of Central Catholic High School, St. Mary's University, and Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, TX, and served in the U.S. Army as a flight surgeon. In 1957 he married his loving and devoted wife Lita Solas. After completing his tour of duty, they moved to St. Louis, MO for his OB-GYN residency, then returned to San Antonio where he practiced medicine for over 40 years. Pat also provided countless hours of pro bono care at clinics in San Antonio, and served the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word, offering compassionate care to a community he held dear.
He served as president of the Catholic Physicians Guild and chief of the OB-GYN department of the Santa Rosa Hospital. He was a member of the American Medical Association, Bexar County Medical Society, American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and the San Antonio Surgical Society.
Beyond medicine, Pat was an avid, lifelong sailor, and was a member of the Lake Canyon Yacht Club and Oak Hills Country Club. He enjoyed sailing and racing his J-27 sailboat "Big Red" frequently on Canyon Lake and around Texas. He was as much at home on the water as he was in the operating room.
An avid traveler and lover of culture, Pat explored much of Europe over the years. He held a particular fondness for Paris-the city's opera house, its nearby wine regions, and above all, a good glass of Bordeaux.
His family and his medical practice were Pat's top priorities. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, and recently a great grandfather. He is predeceased by his parents and infant daughter Maureen Edwards. He is survived by his wife Lita of 69 years, and four children, Michael Edwards (Norma), Lee Ann Edwards Powell (James), Susan Edwards, Amy Edwards DuCharme (Justin), and by five granddaughters, Erin English (Austin), Caitlin Bernstein (Braeden), Elizabeth DuCharme, Caroline DuCharme, Claire Powell, and one great grandson, Brooks English.
He was a man of humor, humility, and grace – deeply loved by his family and respected by generations of patients and colleagues. His legacy lives on in the lives he touched and the values he embodied. His strength, kindness and love will continue to guide us, always.

A private burial will be held at Mission Burial Park North. We invite everyone to join us for a celebration of life at Oak Hills Country Club, 5403 Fredericksburg Rd., on Friday, June 20, 2025 beginning at 3:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of your choice. I worked for Dr. Edwards as his office receptionist for just one year, Sept. 1998-Sept. 1999, but enjoyed it very much. I liked it when his wife would come in and help out in the office, too. One Sunday evening I wasn´t feeling well and called him to tell him that I didn´t think I could come to work the next day. He asked me to describe my symptoms, and when I did, he told me to get to the emergency room right away because I had appendicitis. He was right, and may have saved my life by telling me to go there.
My sincere sympathy to the family.
